I've the move to Monarch and am enjoying longer games. Republic as Govt about 80% of the time, I occasionally try Feudalism.

My question is the waiting period after making peace. 20 turns can seem an eternity. Is there a way to entice the AI to attack before the 20 turns so I dont lose my military advantage and not get hit with war weariness?

Demand techs and cities from them. You can even do it several times in one single turn. Then ask them to leave your territory if they have troops there.

Note that you still may have war weariness since the last war, even if the AI declares on you. However, WW should be reduced compared to when you declare on the AI.

You can read how WW works here: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ3/strategy/war_weariness.php

You can tie Peace Treaties to Military Alliances. Then when the AI sign peace and break the alliance your ally will declare war on you. This is also a great way to generate War Happyness (but I am not sure what will happen if you have a good deal of WW accumulated from the last war.)
Chamnix' "Milk Run" in the HoF forum has a few good examples of this technique.

Leaving a border city completely undefended - but still in reach of some of your better units, of course - will often proof to be tempting for the AI and lead them to invade.

If you were still in war happiness when you made peace, if you re-declare then you get the happiness back. It can be a problem for your trading rep if you re-declare within 20 turns though.

If you can trap some of their units in your territory, and they're mad enough at you (i.e. "furious") you can provoke a declaration whenever you want by giving a boot order.

Bait. a stack of workers not ont he border but just close enoughf or then to try and get at it can lure an hateful AI to go after them by crossing the border. When they do pull the workers back and demand they with draw, rinse and repeat if needed.

Undefended border cities and "bait" both will increase war weariness if captured. I also doubt they'll work since people can play little-to-no military games and not get attacked. As already stated, make outrageous demands until they get "Furious", and then ask them to leave. If you can't ask them to leave *and* you can some gold lying around, you make outrageous demands and then unsafely steal a tech.

Would a declaration of war after failing in stealing a tech still cause war happiness?

No, I'm not sure... but they declared war on you, not the other way around. So, I would think it still gives you war happiness.

Are you sure, Spoonwood? My vote goes to no war happyness here. I'll try to check it out later, for a definite result.

I'm 99% sure it doesn't; the 1% takes into account my time ravaged brain possibly remembering wrongly.

Yes, but you(the player) provoked it. I think when you get declared due to an MPP you also get no war happiness.

EDIT: X-post

I don't agree that you provoked the war. However, my own tests indicate a failed steal of techonology doesn't give you war happiness. At the same time, it doesn't appear to make your citizens unhappy like when you declare war on the AIs either.

I think that no type of DoW immediately gives you war weariness, except it is still stowed up from a previous war.

(The best thing about failed espionage missions is that you don't get a rep hit for any broken treaties, so it is good as a treaty/trade deal killer. Don't steal your techs, buy them for insane amounts of gpt (and not only techs, lump sum gold works as well), then kill the deal with failed espionage.)

If you really want to up the ante in enticing the AI to war just crank the aggression up a couple of notches!!

 :ar15:

Works for me, plus I find that the AI war with each other more -keeping their infrastructure low because of WW and low research while keeping large armies active.

been there done that, it just makes the AI more prone to exceptional feats of stupid. why an AI would attack a battleship with a pack of galleys I will probably never know.

Besides alliances is their any way to get the AI to go to war with each other?
