So I reached a point in my current game where I can generate more espionage points with my slider than research. This happens because jails + intelligence agencies will give you +100% espionage, while you can't exceed 100% with research in most cities until you build laboratories (except your oxford city).

Therefore, I'd run representation at low or no science on a tech nobody else is researching, put the espionage slider up, and then use spies to steal cutting edge techs from rivals.

So I stole electricity several turns after somebody researched it. I was a little late because stealing biology from the other side of the world was a priority. This caused me to have a teach lead on everybody, but I noticed as I checked out his cities before I stole the tech that he was aggressively building broadway with his bureaucracy-boosted, high-production capital. My capital is also running bureaucracy, but was for producing military units.

So I unleashed my spies against his unfortunately security bureau protected city. I used 3 spies just trying to get one fortified to -50% cost. All were caught by counterintel agents while sitting there. I then used another boatload of spies (3) to destroy production of broadway when he had one turn to go with no stationary spy bonus. 2 of those spies failed, 66% odds of success, 3rd did it. I had a city that was building broadway, but was about 14turns away.

So I thought I had succeeded in allowing myself to build broadway first. 12 turns later he completes broadway anyway. I was baffled at how he did it so fast (this is on marathon mode). Then I noticed he was running universal suffrage.

At least I made it expensive for him, though it was certainly expensive for myself as well. Thankfully he was willing to trade the musicals. I'll invade him later.

Yesterday I tried an extreme gaming concept of "NO WORLD WONDERS ALLOWED, PERIOD". Not even Oracle or GL. Nothin'. In a way the total cutoff was a sense of freedom to really focus on units and military (whipped infrastructure only as needed to raise happy/healthy caps or enable specialists), but I did notice that my tech-beelining strategy sort of floundered a bit, since I wasn't looking at techs from a "what can I build with it" perspective, and for units BRUTE FORCE (axes, cats) was working nicely against my financial-builder neighbor Victoria, didn't really need much tech enhancement militarily at the time. So I kinda lost track of both the slider and what I was beelining and why, which was both good and bad. Good because there *shouldn't* be too much focus on teching for a wonder build, but bad because I should probably fine tune what I tech and why and when to enhance the military push, make it more efficient.

And one drawback in an early war when the slider is skimming the 10% zone is, almost no EPs to speak of, so there isn't much opportunity to do that voodoo that spies do.

That's annoying GE maybe?

Anyway quick question, do you run nationhood when you do this(+25% espionage)? I've gone Espionage late game before, but rarely because I am usually tech leader by then due to my tendency to kill anyone teching faster then me:satan:

I didn't have a lot of choice in who I warred with as every time I'd be about to vassalize or finish somebody, somebody else would vassalize them, and this continued until I was almost to victory, lol.

I rarely use nationhood and I didn't, but I'd run it while having the espionage slider up if I were using a spiritual leader. I was addicted to bureaucracy because my capital was my heroic epic city and my espionage city that could pump out units with 3 promos. Being the 3rd best base commerce city (2nd best production) with the commerce bonus going to +200% espionage means that the increased espionage from nationhood probably would not have been enough to make up for anarchy. I had just noticed my slider could give me more espionage than beakers due to the fact that most of my cities were +75% beakers and +100% espionage. It was my first huge immortal domination - that I just finished an hour or so ago. I think I got amazingly unlucky with the spies getting caught, but I really didn't expect the AI to use thousands of gold to rush it after I destroyed the production. It was a big loss for both of us, probably my biggest mistake/setback in the game, but it ended up being a 300k normalized game anyway.
