Instead of building a specific unit such as a swordsman or spearman, one should be able to build a standard infantry or cavalry, and then equip the units with researched weapons and technologies. This would make maintaining modern armies more flexible

I've mentioned this before. This idea means that you would need many, many different kinds of weapons, such as: knives, swords, spears, etc. It would require more in-game graphics, a civilopedia entry (if needed), and a big hassle. Having to maintain every single unit that you produce is painstaking. If weapons were a separate attachment, you would increase the "production list" with all the units/buildings you can build to about twice, or even three times its size. Civilization is a bit complicated as it is. Adding this might increase the complexity of the game.

This is a good idea, if someone can plan out a certain way to make it so that it isn't annoying and a hassle to manage the production screen and the units.

I like the idea of building pikemen, archers, and infantry instead of building a generic unit and then having to equip it. However, in the later ages, ‘discovering’ a chassis type and then being able to make variants of it might be useful. But it gets really discouraging to build an Army, fill it with medieval infantry and have to disband it because you can’t upgrade or change units. Especially since heroes aren’t a dime a dozen, even with heroic epic. All you have to do is look at British history and see the how today’s household regiments are outfitted. They’ve been around for a mighty long time, especially the Royal Horse Artillery, but you don’t see them using Elizabethan muzzleloaders on the battlefield.
