Since we now have two devstreams, I thought I would take the time to make a comprehensive list of what in-game events provide era score, and how much era score is obtained.

    +1 Era Score
    • Create a unit that requires a particular strategic resource for the first time after another player already has.
    • Discover a technology from a particular era for the first time.
    • Discover a civic from a particular era for the first time.
    • Grow a city to a certain population threshold (10?).
    • Meet a rival player.
    • Settle a city near a rival player's city.
    • Clear a tribal village.
    • Settle a city on a tile with high appeal.
    +2 Era Score
    • Establish a trading post in a particular civilization for the first time.
    • Recruit a great person.
    • Clear a barbarian camp that has not discovered any of your cities.
    • Adopt a government from a particular tier for the first time after another player already has.
    • Settle a city on a particular continent for the first time.
    • Found a pantheon.
    • Become the new suzerain of a city-state that is at war with you.
    • Use loyalty to convince a free city to join your empire.
    • Be the first player to create a unit that requires a particular strategic resource.
    • Use a unit who is being strengthened by a great general to kill an enemy unit for the first time.
    • Send a naval unit onto an ocean tile for the first time.
    • Become the suzerain of a city-state that shares a border with a player who is at war with you.
    • Be the first player to launch an inquisition.
    +3 Era Score
    • Be the first player to discover a particular natural wonder.
    • Clear a barbarian camp that has discovered one of your cities.
    • Be the first player to adopt a government from a particular tier.
    • Construct a yield-producing district with an adjacency bonus of +3 or more.
    • Be the first player to become the suzerain of a particular city-state.
    • Participate in an emergency as a member and win.
    +4 Era Score
    • Found a religion after another player already has.
    • Build a world wonder.
    • Build your civilization's unique infrastructure for the first time.
    • Build your civilization's unique unit for the first time.
    +5 Era Score
    • Be the first player to meet every other player in the game.
    • Be the first player to circumnavigate the map.
Let me know if I missed any.

These all seem rather blah to me, there is nothing here you wouldn't do if you didn't get some arbitrary points for it. All of these are things you do automatically if you are any good at the game. Tripping over rewards without having to do anything different is bad game design. I hope they add some very high-scoring ones that you have to go out of your normal way to get, but I'm worried they'll just turn the game into a free goodie fest like 5.

They're not goals to work for: they're mile markers

Very cool. I’ll have to get better with my science and culture in the early game before this expansion because currently at Emperor I lag behind severely then.

    Nice thread.

Due to current stream I'm not sure whether having more era points being better or it's better having fewer era points so that we can enjoy dark age policy bonus. Dark Age policy is imbalanced and make dark ages even better than heroic in some cases.

Ideally you'll jump back and forth. It's seems like the game is designed so it's hard to stay in any one or the other. But a heroic age is much better than a Golden Age. So if you're on the line between Dark and Normal, opt for the Dark and then save that Historical Moment for the next era.

Thanks, I'll update the first post.

It's true these are all things you would be doing anyway, but I think the design aspect of it comes from the fact that before it didn't matter when you did these things, but now it does. It may not have a huge influence on how players play the game, but it will help one session feel different from the next.

I feel on Immortal and Deity it might be tough when the first eras are very short. Good you get at least 10 turns I guess when an Age is over.
Anyone knows what happens when you have reached GA limit? Doe the excess points just go to waste?

Planning for era points would become very important.

Sometimes, when an era is almost over and you have already reached the threshold for a Golden Age, don't do anything that would grant era points.

Unless you care about your score, because that's where overflow goes. I personally don't care about score except when I get an early religious victory and get named Dan Quayle.

    +3 Era Score

I think being the first to found a religion is mising. Not sure about the reward, likely to be 5.

As I understand it, one of the points is to incite the player to manage more carefully his advancement through eras.

If you did not care to explore, build your empire, etc, as you reach the next era you will find yourself in a dark age. Beelining will carry its own risks.

The extra points do not go to waste, per se. It just means you are that much closer to the next era’s thresholds.

    Good idea for a thread.

    Slightly off topic:

Does anyone else think the historic moments feature would be more interesting if, in line with the R&F theme, it also kept track of negative events (e.g. you lose a city) which give negative Era Score? Just something I've been musing about.

This is a good idea, and nicely thematic.

Losing emergencies, being converted away from the religion you founded, losing units to barbarians, that sort of thing.

Great idea! As long as it is not too much, like lose a GP race... but maybe losing highly promoted units, being culturally or religiously dominated, be the last to advance to a certain tech etc.

It being more dififcult to gain a Normal Age early isn't necessarily a bad thing. It makes it easier to gain a Heroic Age, after all.
