I'm experiencing an inordinate amount of stress right now and I need a diversion. Whats some good escapist literature? You know, some book series that has the aesthetic value of Reality TV but which is a pleasant and engrossing diversion nonetheless?

Haruki Murakami and Thomas Pynchon are surprisingly light reads.

also, the very premise of Gao Xingjian's Soul Mountain is escapism; you may find that to be a refreshing and necessary read. The story contains no named characters and is pure, simple plot from a man who decides that he's had enough of stratified life in China's cities

Read the Persepolis series. Graphic Novels, but they are good and it always helps me relieve stress when I accomplish something. Since you could probably get through the two part series in a day, it would be a rewarding goal. Thats how I work anyway.

Any Sci-Fi novel. I recommend any of the Peter F. Hamilton series: "The Night's Dawn Series", "Commonwealth Saga" or "The void Series"

Discworld, assuming you haven't read them already.

Robert E. Howard short stories.

The Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child Agent Aloysius Pendergast books:

  • Relic
  • Reliquary
  • Cabinet of Curiosities
  • Still Life With Crows
  • Brimstone
  • Dance of Death
  • The Book of the Dead
  • The Wheel of Darkness

The Hardy Boys

The Hardy Boys

+1 nostalgia

Try The Kraken Wakes. I wouldn't say it was anything like reality TV but it is well written and interesting. It also cleverly satirises Cold War attitudes. Perhaps that sounds a bit daft or nondescript but it is effective.

I second this.
