The hard limit for civs is 22, but once Brave New World releases, we will have 43 at our disposal. That is going to make setting up what I consider to be the ultimate civ experience - a TSL Huge Earth - a difficult task. So I think it'd be
interesting to see what people's lists would look like.

The novelty of the new civs aside, what civs do you think would be essential to a TSL Huge Earth experience?

My List (in no particular order)

Spoiler :
1. England
2. Russia
3. Sweden
4. France
5. Portugal
6. Spain
7. Germany
8. China
9. Japan
10. Indonesia
11. India
12. Arabia
13. Songhai
14. Zulu
15. Native American (Iroqious or Other)
16. Inca
17. Aztec
18. Ethiopia
19. Persia
20. Mongolia
21. Ottomans (or Byzantium)
22. Polynesia (or Dutch)

I would think:

1. America
2. Aztecs
3. Brazil (formerly Iroquois)
4. Inca
5. England
6. France
7. Spain
8. Germany
9. Russia
10. Sweden
11. Egypt
12. Carthage (or Morocco)
13. Songhai
14. Zulu
15. Rome
16. Arabia
17. India
18. China
19. Japan
20. Polynesia
21. Siam
22. Indonesia

Going for geographic coverage, that is.

England
France
Spain
Rome/Venice
Greece.
Germany.
Russia.

Egypt
Persia
The Ottomans.

Morocco
Ethiopia
The Zulus

Brazil
The Incas.

The Aztecs
America

China
India
Japan
Indonesia

Polynesia

There, all the globe covered. I will go and consider Egypt "middle eastern", since if i play with them i would go for the Sinai and try to take the fertile crescent and not the vast wastlands of the Sahara.

Dang, forgot Brazil. I'd cut the Iroquois for it, putting 2 Civs in each American continent.

Gedemon's DLL changes the hard limit to be up to 34, add some for that :)

I couldn't play without Putmalk's Civ IV Diplomacy mod and you can only have one mod which changes the DLL at a time. Plus the turns would be excruciatingly slow with 34 civs and their trade units all moving around.

1. England (no need for America)
2. Portugal (no need for Brazil)
3. Spain
4. Aztec
5. Inca
6. Iroquois
7. France
8. Germany
9. Rome
10. Poland
11. Russia
12. Egypt
13. Morocco
14. Zulu
15. Ethiopia
16. Persia
17. China
18. Japan
19. Indonesia
20. Arabia
21. Polynesia
22. Songhai

I'd like something more Modern, but also geographically diverse.

1. America
2. Arabia
3. Aztecs (Mexico)
4. Brazil
5. China
6. Egypt
7. England
8. Ethiopia
9. France
10. Germany
11. Greece
12. Korea
13. India
14. Indonesia
15. Japan
16. Morocco
17. Ottomans (Turkey)
18. Rome (Italy)
19. Russia
20. Spain
21. Sweden
22. The Iroquois or Sioux (Canada)

Going for balance coverage here (fewest isolated civs):
1. America
2. Iroqouis
3. Aztec
4. Maya
5. Inca
6. Brazil
7. Egypt
8. Songhai
9. Zulu
10. Spain
11. France
12. England
13. Sweden
14. Poland
15. Rome
16. Greece
17. Russia
18. Mongolia
19. Persia
20. China
21. India
22. Polynesia

Honestly I feel the only region that can afford to lose some civs is Europe...but assuming 34 civs I would say

1.America
2. Iroquois
3. Aztecs
4.Maya
5.Inca
6.Brazil
7.Polynesia
8.Zulu
9.Ethiopia
10. Songhai
11.Morocco
12. Egypt
13. Carthage
14.Arabia
15. Babylon
16.China
17.Japan
18.Mongolia
19.Korea
20.Russia
21.India
22.Siam
23. Indonesia
24. Britain
25. Spain
26. France
27. Greece
28. Rome
29. Denmark
30. Germany
31. Sweden
32. Portugal
33. Ottomans
34. Persia

Wow its hard to even think of all of the civs...I probably forgot some important ones.

Americas:

1. Iroquois
2. Aztec
3. Brazil
4. Inca

Excluded America because with the Iroquois and the Aztecs, North America is fine.
Brazil and Inca, just to ensure South America has two competing forces

Asia-Pacific:

5. China
6. Japan
7. India
8. Siam
9. Indonesia
10. Polynesia

Excluded Mongolia and Korea, because hey, above is better choices.

Africa:

11. Morocco
12. Ethiopia
13. Zulu

Awesome trio to put together on the same continent! Songhai and Egypt just wouldn't fit

Europe:

14. Portugal
15. France
16. Celts
17. Poland
18. Sweden
19. Russia

Portugal over Spain because MARIA! also gives some space between France
Celts over England, for flavor
Poland over Germany, Austria, and Huns because of Winged Hussar!
Sweden to be off the mainland
and Russia because it's freakin Russia

Middle East:

20. Persia
21. Arabia
22. Ottomans

Best spacing for the middle east IMO, excludes Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, Byzantium, and Greece

---Barring the 2 unrevealed civs, this seems to be the best spacing between capitals and geographic coverage (Sorry America)

EDIT: just think about Africa! Morocco with its desert ability, Ethiopia with its fewer cities = better fighting ability, and Zulu with its ...well you know....Zulu ability! Nice and balanced Africa, interesting!

How many city-states?

I am really looking foward to play a TSL huge Earth map. I haven't played a TSL since Vanilla CIV V and with all the new Civs and their unique abilities it can be a really fun experience. Morocco starting near to desert tiles, Polynesia in the Pacific and the Inca by the Andes, all the civs would have a chance to shine.

Maybe Spain with Gibraltar "right there" would be a little out of balance.. or would Morocco discover it first?

My list is based on geographical spread. The importance of a civ not taken into account (except a few instances where its noted), since by gameplay standards they are all "equally" important, in theory:

Americas, 5 civs:

1. America
2. Iroquois
3. Aztec or Maya - represent the same area
4. Inca
5. Brazil

Europe, 5 civs:

6. England*
7. Spain or Portugal - Battle of the exploration civs
8. France or Netherlands or Germany or Poland or Austria or Rome - Shame since they are so important, but just way too cluttered
9. Russia
10. Greece or Byzantium or Ottomans - Same as above, clutter factor

Africa and Middle East, 6 civs:

11. Assyria or Babylon or Persia - Clutter factor
12. Arabia or Egypt - Battle of the desert civs
13. Carthage or Morocco - Battle of North Africa
14. Songhai
15. Ethiopia
16. Zulu

Asia and Oceania, 6 civs:

17. Mongolia
18. China**
19. India
20. Siam
21. Indonesia
22. Polynesia

Civs not listed at all:
Sweden - Icy area not often settled by the human player
Denmark - Same as above
*Celts - England, with water benefits, gets the nod over Celts
Huns - No need for them
**Korea - Could have been China or Korea, but China is too important to leave out
Japan - They start on a relatively small 'island'. Unlike Indonesia and Polynesia, no UA incentive to justify

Where's Japan?

I think this is right, except I'd take out Mongolia and America. In their place I'd put Rome and Germany and I'd put the Huns in to cover the steppe. The Huns and the Mongolians can arguably be considered related to each other, and I think the Huns start a bit further west so it balances more.

Well thinking of ones that might exclude each other

1. Portugal/Spain
2. Denmark/Sweden
3. England/Celts (unless one replaces France with Celts)
4. Rome/Venice
5. Byzantines/Ottomans/Greeks
6. Babylon/Assyria/Arabia
7. Aztec/Maya
8. Iroquois/America
9. Germany/Austria/Poland
10. Morocco/Carthage

'No Competition Civs'

Persia
India
China
Japan
Mongol
Indonesia
Inca
Brazil
Songhai
Ethiopia
Zulu
Other Native American Civ
Siam
Russia
Egypt

Too Squished possibly
Korea
Dutch

Enough space, but not quite woth taking up a spot for
Huns

OR go with my 16 Civ idea

Rome (covering the Romance civs)
Greece
Germany
Russia
England (America for the purpose of territory balance)
Aztec
Inca
China
Japan
India
Persia
Mongols
Babylon
Egypt
Songhai
Ethiopia

(then lots of CS and raging barbs)
