EUIII or Vicky II?

If you could only play one for the rest of your life, which one would you pick?

Probably Vicky II. I don't much like EUIII.

It depends on your preferences, really. Vicky is very much more an economic game than EU3 - in EU3, there's not really very much to do if you're not at war with someone; however, Vicky's various domestic systems are pretty complicated if you don't know what you're doing. I'd pick EU3 only because I understand EU3 very much better than Vicky.

The reason I asked is because I can only buy one, but I don't know which one is better.

Play the demos. The only caution I think is that EU3 with expansions is much different than the original EU3 demo.

Also are you interested in say high medieval to the modern era, or are you just interested in 19th/20th C. history?

I'd say EU3 has an economic aspect, but it's pretty strictly tied to the idea of evolving a merchant empire---lots of trade infrastructure, navies, colonies. I've never actually reached the end of an EU3 game so I can't say for sure if there's industrialization.

Trade is way more abstracted in EU3 than Vicky - in EU3, you're moving money around; in Vicky, you move goods around for money.
I wouldn't think there's industrialisation, the game after the 1770s is basically just a tack-on to try and squeeze the Americans and Napoleon in. Most of the mechanics don't simulate stuff well by that point.

One of the fun things about EU3 is the ability to take a non-Western power and have it compete with Europe for colonisation and technology for all of that time period - you can do that with Vicky if you civilise (say, like historical Japan), but most of the New World at the least is already divided up and there's not much you can do about it.

This thread didn't help that much. :( I was hoping for something like 'Victoria II can suck it, EUIII is da shiz'. I'm leaning towards EUIII because it seems easier to understand.

As has been mentioned EU3 is probably not so great without all of the expansions especially HttT. When I only had vanilla EU3 I stopped playing the game after reading some AARs and seeing how much more awesome the game was with the expansions. Once I got the expansions all was fine however.

Vikky 2 is quite good although we're still waiting on a patch to fix a bunch of balancing issues. There are mods that already fix these for someone who is willing.

I voted Vikky 2 mostly because it has more economic and internal politic aspects and I personally prefer the time period more. Both are however quite awesome games.

Edit: Vikky 2 isn't all that difficult to understand. There are tutorials that come with the game and compared to the original large parts of the game have become automated. I would recommend downloading the Vikky 2 demo and giving this a try.

Can't really say untill Vicky 2 has been patched properly!

EU3 is good but I do tire of it after awhile. Yeah I have HTTT with beta 4 whatever.

Vicky II. The game is shorter, but there's so much more to do, but you forge an empire in a more realistic way and there's less blobbing. Plus, it has the most badass ruler ever, Otto Von Bismarck AKA the guy with a spear on his hat, as its box art.

My only gripe I can foresee myself having with Vicky II is there being less nations and a number of really large, well developed ones. But I look forward to it, and playing at least one game of Vicky .. maybe. If it lets me save when i reinstall.

I'd vote for Victoria only because I don't like big black unexplorable (unexploitable?) holes in my world, it feels restrictive, even if it is accurate for the time period.

If you get EU3 be sure to get complete of Amazon as it is only $8. Then download HTTT from Gamersgate.

I agree with you partly. EU trade doesn't really have commodities, other than to say this here province is worth more than that province. Vicky has commodities like Colonization and more.

You can get EUIII Complete (doesn't have the HTTT expansion though) for $5-10 these days.
So maybe you can get both.

The problem with EUIII, as someone already said, is that if you aren't at war there isn't much to do, and the warfare isn't all that interesting.

I already find semi-broken unpatched Vicky 2 to be a hell of a lot more fun than EUIII + all expansions.

My other hobbies include looking at graphs and accumulating data in spreadsheets. So you may not like V2 :p

Well if you don't have a head for stats and such, or patience - maybe Paradox games aren't really a good fit :)

Most people here do, however, since it's a Civ forum.
