    two expansions later
"Civ 5's AI plays to much like a real person! Why can't it roleplay?"

I didn't know real players tend to spam anti-air units only.

To be fair, I can understand that kind of complaints to some extent (not specifically regarding Civ 5 as I haven't really played it enough to judge, particularly the new expansion, but in general) as getting the balance between making an AI competant and interesting to play against is pretty hard. In a game like Civ, most players (myslef included) will want the AI to "roleplay" to some extent - for example, with diplomacy, the AI should consider things like past friendships, common policies/religions/etc and relations in general, as well as the personality of the historic charcacter (no warmonger Ghandhi for example) when deciding whether to go to war. A human player on the other hand probably wouldn't really do so, instead thinking solely along the lines of "can I win", because he's just playing a game. We don't want the AI to feel like it is playing the game (and thus going all out to win) as opposed to really managing a nation.

I general, I feel Civ 4 got this side of the AI pretty much right - the AIs behave in a generally rational and understandable way from the point of view of running a country, international relations and so on (well, except Monty, but he's Monty...) as opposed to playing a game. Civ 4's AI was, on the other hand, lacking on things like city specialisation, tech proritising and so on (ie mechanical aspects).

So the goal from my point of view is an AI that can understand and implement the mechanics of the game well, but on a wider scale feels "historical" as opposed to "a game". And it's rare that any game gets it just right....

Any hints or ideas at what it could be? I don't' really follow EUIV as much as I do CKII, so I'm wondering if there's anything the fans are demanding the most or is a painfully obvious idea (like with CKII the Muslim DLC was the first one because it was the obvious choice that everyone wanted, so I've heard).

If we're going with what the fans want there will be 700% more byzantium.
However, the Pdox facebook page posted this:

Hmm. Doesn't say much, and much less than the Sons of Abraham pics for CKII. My first thought was something in Eastern Europe for some reason, but I could see that for Manchuria/East Asia, or something to do with colonization and the native Americans.

That,s all that's been said so far, as far as I know.

That picture could hint at just about anything, sadly :(

As the guy behind the Age of Discovery mod, I'm very interested to see what they come up with.

History flamewar threads on the EUIV forums mentioning Jared Diamond every other page in 3... 2... 1...

That aside, looks good. As someone who currently absolutely, vehemently loathes the current tech system in EU, I really do hope the native Americans do actually get fleshed out so they actually pose a threat. I'd be too hopeful if PI implements a decent system for the spread of disease across the Americas that saps the native American states of their power, but eh.

And also as someone who dislikes how ahistorically easy colonization is in the game that maybe the colonization mechanics in general get looked at. If only to prevent stuff more appropriate for Vicky II's era like Europeans owning most of Africa.

Anyhow that said looking good. Probably will wait to actually buy the game proper until they flesh out some of the other regions, like Africa or East Asia, but I like what I'm seeing - this is definitely the sort of big DLCs they're talking about. I hope they expand the randomized world generator to other places in the world too (for instance, it'd be cool if I were playing as an Asian power but the European dudes who bugger me were different every time).

What I'm hoping for is the creation of a new world on the map where large sections of the Americas have been moved or are missing entirely. It would be absolutely hilarious to see a player "know" there is a new world out there somewhere and send out a massive fleet, only to miscalculate enormously and lose the entire thing to attrition.

Oh god, that would be awesome.

I don't think PI's randomized world will have the complexity or the modding potential as Civ's randomized worlds, but maybe, just maybe.

I'd love to see a "Jared Diamond" randomized world option where the New World is supposed to be advanced as Europe or whatever but isn't.

Or one where almost all the New World is water except for a few islands, so Columbus would be sailing straight into ocean and die of attrition as everyone said he would.

Speaking of Jared Diamond, I'm rather impressed there haven't really been any flamewars related to that on the EUIV forums - yet. I did see the hints of one in the first dev diary thread, but it appeared to die down.

The main angst seems to be people who fail at reading the dev diary and are complaining that they don't want "fantasy natives in a fantasy world" but do want "improved natives and more of them". The later being what they will get for free in the patch and the second part of the former being what they will get in the DLC if they actively select it.
