Europa Universalis V (EU5) announced

What I didn't see on a quick view of the video was whether the gamer had any input to the changes during the battle - the placement of 'regiments' on the left, right or center, the deployment of reserves, or any ability to 'cut losses' and run for it once the battle is joined and lost.

This is a retreat button that the player can press during the battle to cut their losses and withdraw.

EU 5 now has a confirmed release date of November 4, 2025 on PC only. Pre-orders are now open on Steam.

The base game has a MSRP of US $59.99.

A "Premium" edition is also available for pre-order at US $84.99.

$85 and $120 AUD.

Plus, it appears most of the game has been stripped out to be sold as DLC after release. Why the 'F' can't games just be released in full!

As much as I love EU, Paradox is no-go for me due to Cities Skylines 2. 👎

How does that pricing compare to AUD pricing for Civ VII on release? The base game in USD is about $10 cheaper.

I agree that Paradox DLC is extreme, but I never fell out of love with EU4 (owning only a small fraction of DLC) and recent updates to Victoria 3 have made me fall back in love with that game as well.

Civ7 is $120 / $160 / $190 (Settler) / $200 (Founder) full price (it's -30% right now).

Yeah EU is my favourite PDX line, but I won't go near them till they fix the mess CS2 is. Two years after release, and "ultimate" edition content is still not done. It was all supposed to be out after the first year.

One difference between EU5 and CS2 is that Paradox is the developer as well as publisher of EU5. Doesn't guarantee anything, as we saw with Leviathon, but CS2 being a colossal order to fix is at least in part on decisions made by its developer - I would argue being over-ambitious and adopting unproven technology for the simulation were among its core issues. I wonder if EU5 will also be over-ambitious, and there's always the Paradox question if will there be enough muscle on the bones to be fun in the vanilla version, but I doubt PDS (Paradox Development Studios) will make a leap of faith with the technological underpinnings.

Nonetheless, I'll be waiting to see how the reviews are at release. I've certainly gotten my value from EU4 over the years, and would have even if I had bought every DLC at full price, but there's a certain recent strategy game that is a good reminder of the reasons why I haven't pre-bought anything since 2013.

It seems that "certain recent strategy game" is a writing on the wall for the complete genre, but short after 2013 Civ 7 even did not exist. :D

There goes my next 15 years of disposable income I guess. EU is very addictive.
Perhaps one might take out a second mortgage to support a Paradox habit?

The content creator embargo is lifted on the 2nd, but I haven't heard anything about the review embargo lift.

I think streamers are releasing videos today! Maybe they aren’t allowed to do critical reviews until the 2nd?
They are but I dont know if it is just selected streamers. There is some kind of multiplayer premiere today.

Reviews are good so far! Reiterating my excitement in the echoing cavern of this empty sub-forum!

Based on the reviews that I have seen, EU5 sounds like a dream come true for die-hard fans. One review said that it is the most ambitious and detailed EU game ever. Specifically, it points out that EU5 will model every person in the world, and provinces will be more detailed with terrain and climate affecting agriculture and combat. EU5 sounds very intimidating to a EU noob like me.

Yeah it seems like the level of detail is astounding. I've heard good things about the tutorial and the UI (also they have added the option to automate many features), so I'm hopeful it won't be impossible to learn and play.
