I started a new game as Gandhi on Emperor. I didn't bother changing the tech order. I expanded out to 5 cities. My closest neighbors are the Romans and the Zulus. It was nice in one sense, because I was the first to every technology as I worked my way down the default list. But because of my stupid tech order, I was building libraries instead of archers in those cities. The Zulus caught me with nothing better than warriors defending my cities and I couldn't get the archers out quickly enough.

This is what I like so much about this game. You really have to balance your defense against the growth of your economy and research rate.

Maybe I'll save a game early (like at the very beginning). And try several approaches to the first 30 turns. Then compare the results.
