I would love to see an expansion add an antiquity crisis in which the civs on the distant lands reach you first, and early. Perhaps the crisis involves units representing those civs being spawned just off the visible map, with the ability to settle/conquer, and at the start of exploration these civs are generated deep into the exploration tech tree.
I was thinking how the new exploration age adds some colonization mechanics that never seemed to emerge naturally in VI, but seem likely to always advantage the home continent toward being the colonizer (it appears the distant lands will be more sparsely populated to make room for new settlements). Even more unlikely to emerge naturally in VI was discovering that an unexplored continent was technologically more advanced, and I suspect that will not occur naturally in VII as well.
I’d like to have ~20% chance for a given game to reach this crisis, with the option to disable it when I don’t want the peril of an early defeat.
Possibly pairing well with this, I’d also love to see an expansion add an economic means of upgrading units beyond one’s current tech progress (likely at steep cost based on relationship with civs who have reached that tech) to represent buying weapons from other nations. I’d like more options to experience the game as a civ who isn’t always leading the world in technological invention.
