Just askin', but how long did it take those of you who are currently playing on Emporer to go from just bought the game to were you are now. I know the ones who will reply have been playing civ since 94' but I mean those of you who don't fall in this category.

just wanted to know because Iv'e been playing for 5 years or so and am stuck on noble any help?

I went from settler in Jan. 2008 to emperor around the June/July 2008 range. However, I'm pretty active on the forums. To gain consistency on immortal took me until about 2 months ago .

The fastest way to improve is to post in the series games like noble's club, monarch student, immortal university, LHC, and so on and compare your game to others. You can also ask situation-specific questions. It's one thing to read guides, and another to actually do it after all.

Another good idea, along with the ones listed by TheMeInTeam, is follow along with some of the succession games in the Stories and Tales thread. Alot of very strong players participate and they give detailed reports about what they're doing and why they're doing it.

I've went from a Noble level player to dominating Monarch and being competitive on Emporer in the last 3 or 4 months.

I went from Settler in May 2008 to Emperor in November 2008, its taken me a while to play Immortal, however. I learned my game from readings the ALCs, the RPCs and the KotWs.

I've been playing for ever, and I've just recently got a solid handle on Monarch. Though I will admit though the majority of the early bits of play time were spent not truly Understanding the game, as much as I had thought. Once you get to a fundamental area of understanding progression should rapidly accelerate. I'm about ready to advance again. :)

I probably fall into this category (played civ II since 96), so I won't bother answering ;). But yes, I think experience with similar TBS games was a huge help to hop over the earlier levels. I believe Emperor is probably the first level that demands more than a superficial knowledge of the game in order to win, but that is assuming the player has extensively played previous incarnations of the civ/AC series.

I'm with Jedi_Otis on studying the succession games. There are also a few excellent Deity walkthrus scattered around the forums. You might have your sights set on beating Emperor right now, but there is no harm in learning from the best, and Deity strategies work on lower levels anyway, although not necessarily vice versa.

Knowledge of the game's diplomacy mechanics and research/bulb paths is pivotal at the higher levels, but unfortunately there is so much to learn that it will realistically take some experience to absorb all the information. There are some excellent resources though to assist the player though. I'd at the very least suggest downloading the c4bts ref:

The only Civ game that really appealed to me was BtS so I am not one of 'those' players. I picked up my friends copy of Civ IV because I was bored and was surprised at how fast I got hooked on this game. I played civ and civ II but both had not such qualities as to draw me into it.

Right now I am playing emperor, and most of the stuff I learned was learned form these boards. I read a lot of walkthroughs and a few articles. I would not recommend any specific articles to you, but I recommend that you read those that seem interestig and a fun read. If you stop having fun reading them then do not read them. This is after all only a game, and it should be fun.

When stuck on noble I suggest building more workers and really committing your cities to either :hammers: or :commerce:. Having both in each city requires lots of buildings to make the most of that, and that is just not that efficient. Not every city has to do everything. Try to improve the tiles that your cities work, and try not to work unimproved tiles. If you have any questions that are specific youc an always post screenshots and ask what you can do in order to improve.

Played since October, starting on Settler, now on Noble. Decent win rate.

I started in Feb 2007 at Warlord (having played Civ3) and made it to Noble in a month. Then when I got BtS in Feb 08, I went back to Warlord for a few games and back to Noble. I didn't jump to Prince until March 2009, because it took me a long time to get to winning Noble and very consistantly win.

The things that helped me the most were the articles in the War Academy here, and learning two key things: Diplomacy mechanics and City specialization. Once I really understood how to do these two things, I was able to jump to Prince and win my second game on it, and haven't lost since (to be fair, my first Prince game, I was boxed in a really small area with Monty, Shaka and Ghengis as my immediate neighbors and no iron, copper or horses).

I just made the jump to Monarch and won my first game by the skin of my teeth (won space by 2 turns).

All of those games are in the Strategy & Tips forum.

For example, here is the latest Noble's Club game: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=322308

You may want to bookmark this directory thread, which contains links to tens upon tens of past community games. There's a whole lot of discussion there just waiting to be read. :)

I'm in the slow club. I spent a long time on Chieftain & Warlord, and only just moved up to Prince. I can't be bothered putting in the effort required to improve, when I have fun doing what I do. I try to incorporate strategies that I read about into my game, with mixed success, but in general, I'm just lazy and don't micromanage or plan, or concentrate on what I'm doing in a game. I gather those things would be quite important to improving.

Played my first civ game ever, vanilla civ 4, in January 08. Didn't really get active on these forums until about 6 months or so ago (I lurked and learned for awhile though, reading up on some of the great strategy guides in the war academy). That was the point in time I was getting to monarch. So about 9 months to get to monarch, a few more months to get comfortable on emperor, and just now starting to struggle on immortal.

I started just after CIV vanilla came out, Still on Noble. Thoug i've had a long gap off and i prefer playing huge maps at marrathon speed. True endurance civing. I'm trying to broaden my civing skills by using random leader(i've got Stalin this time) instead of churchill.(though i may be able to up a level using Churchill)
