How do you get units above level 4, they dont seem to get any experience for kills.

You can't get over 10xp from killing barbarians (and 5 xp for animals).
You need to fight other civs for that.

A good plan... send your barbarian beaters back home when they get 10xp and send some in fresh rookies to take over.

That doesn't get units above level 4.
You have to fight against other civs, and try some risky below-50% chance battles.

When I'm grooming my units to be true elites, I'll never pit them in a battle with worse that 70% odds. They'll get a point of XP regardless.

Once I won a battle with 0.1% odds. I got 10 XP points. I'm serious!
