Hello everyone!

I just joined these forums. Today, I installed Civilizations V on my computer.

When I started playing, I experienced two technical problems.

1st problem:

Slightly laggy. Just a little bit slow, not a big problem.

2nd problem:

Whenever I meet a new leader, the leader's texture is messed up. It seems as if large ants are crawling all over the leader. Weird. I can also see the face structure as if it is a skeleton.

I am using a Mac Lion. Less than 1 year old, so age shouldn't be the cause of the lag.

Please help me fix these problems ;)

My suggestions:

1) Check your system specs. I am not familiar with Mac products, but if you are running integrated graphics on a lap-top, or lack the core processing power the game suggests, you may run into a variety of issues, including texture problems as well as significant slow downs even just moving around on your own turn.

2) Bear in mind that at the end of a turn in Civ 5, it's sometimes normal to lag, especially in late-game or large-map situations. Even if you meet minimum specs, you may want to avoid the larger map settings, because it's common to have lag at the end of a turn. Lag during a turn, again, is not normal. But end-of-turn lag is common.

3) Check for updated drivers/DirectX software.

4) Consider validating Steam cache; it's happened to me occasionally that after I download/install from Steam, that the game will have a glitch or two until I validate files. Find out how to validate the game cache by Googling it or by going to Steam's website if you don't know how to do this (I haven't had to do it in a while and forgot myself, otherwise I'd tell you :( )

Thanks very much! The first problem has been fixed.

However, the texture of the leaders still is weird.

You described the performance of your computer by "age"? That's not a good sign.

@sufficiency:

I've treated my computer very well, and all other games I have played run very quickly.

I used an old 2006 macbook for 5 or 6 years, so computer age does seem like a factor ;)

If playing on an old computer and you have any graphical issues with DX 11, use DX9 instead.

If there's still graphic related issues, set graphic settings to lowest.

You can't really base a computer's performance on age alone, especially if you're talking about mac who tend to be a few years behind when it comes to the graphics department.(performance wise the Mac Pros are 4-5 years behind ATM. Radeon5770 which is the equivalent of the old 'high end' 4870s.)

I'll second the recommendation for specs though I have a friend who plays the game just fine on an older BOTL laptop. Do you have all your drivers up to date? What graphic settings do you have the game on? My computer can just barely run the game on it's highest settings without lag(i5 2500K, Radeon7770) so the problem could be as simple as having things turned up too high.

Also make sure you're computer isn't overheating. I had some tex problems with CiV awhile back when I had a passive GPU, quit the game immediately and fired up a program to test the temperature. It had hit 100C. :cringe:

i have a nice fast computer but i disabled the leader animations. they were cool at first but i found them unnecessary after a while. they also seem to take a massive amount of processing. The only few times that my computer (or civ) crashed when I was playing it is when a leader animation was trying to pop up. I changed the settings so that only a still picture of the leader pops up. i don't even notice the difference because i'm focused on the content of the meeting rather than the animations. It makes between turns go faster
