The "Exports on History" podcast has interviewed Soren and Leyla Johnson about Old World.
Soren introduces "Old World" actually as "like Civ, but you're playing a real person".
They talk about inspirations for the game (gameplay-wise), what they are trying to represent with it, and how you steer the gameplay.
For all the info, have a listen to the podcast here.

I listened to this on Sunday. From a game design standpoint, one interesting point Soren made was that he wanted there to be more of a tradeoff between the military and the economy than there is in Civ, and the orders system - and that you often have insufficient orders to have your workers fully engaged while at war - plays into this.

It was also interesting to hear that the events had to be toned down a bit in early access, to keep them manageable.

Now I'm wondering if there are any less old Old World podcasts I can add to my queue.

That's a bit funny too, because that doesn't even come close to the amount of event frequency tweaking and adjustments that we made in the next two years, after this interview!

Mostly old ones but check our podcast page. I think the two latest DLC podcasts are what we released this year.
