I notice over time you get less from killing barbs to the point where you are at lvl 10 (100xp) and no longer gain any XP. This only seems to change when I declare war on another civ and start trashing their units and cities. Then I can start gaining XP and levels again.
Can someone explain this in more detail to me please?

I know you get more XP if killing a unit where the odds are quite low to win, like 30% or something.
But if you kill a hero or another special unit shouldn't you get some sort of extra reward?

You can only get up to 100xp from fighting barbarians. A unit with 100 or more xp needs to fight units from other civilizations to gain more xp.
The only way to gain more than 100xp from fighting barbarians is to have the raider trait, it gives +1xp for every fight.

Actually, there are two other ways I can think of:

1. Attach a Great Commander to any unit and it can exceed the 100xp threshold.

2. Use the Valor spell to do the same.

and 3. Change the max barbarian experience in the xml Global Defines file/excel tab. ;)

"Other" implies not the same as the original explaination of how to get over 100 xp from barbs:

Don't you get more exp for defeating tougher/promoted opponents?

Is this actually true? I've never seen any evidence to suggest as such.

Yes, units more xp for winning battles against high odds (this is the same as vanilla). Units also get more xp for attacking rather than defending (as it is in vanilla). Also units get more xp for defeating unique units like acheron, orthus or any of the civ heroes.

the barbarian xp cap should not apply vs orthus, acheron, or the four horsemen

Once you reach 100xp the unit shouldent have much problem fighting the AI units for more. with 10+ promotions your unit can normally take on any other unit of similar tier, irrespective of their defence bonuses.

I'm not sure about that. Take the Longbowman, for example. That unit can get incredible defensive bonuses in a city. With 10 promotions I don't think there is a unit that can destroy it on the first go. I had Basium with over 400 XP and the combat odds were only something like 68%. I suppose it would be similar for a Heavy Crossbowman with that many promotions defending. But, the Longbowman is considered 'only' tier III, I think, and the likes of Macemen, etc. wouldn't stand a chance IMO.

But, unless the city was beseiged quite some time, you wouldn't normally see a Longbowman with 100xp, I think.

yes, longbow men with garison3 are sometimes tough to clean out.
nothing that a few fireballs and suicide skeletons won't solve.

Sometimes a single early high level unit can single handedly take out a civilization, if they have CR3, C5, drill, then they heal faster(even better with a nearby cultist), being able to attack every 2 turns, while it takes longer for the city to build replacements (especially if the land has been pillaged).

I normally try to maintain very low casualties, meaning less hammers for replacements. Eventually the AI normally runs out of steam while I’ve only lost one or two units, and am constantly building more. Of course sometimes when fireballs and skeletons are not available there is a need to sacrifice hammers to dig out entrenched garrison-3 heavy crossbowmen.
