A mod aimed at bringing value to exploration, better recon unit parity between AI and human, and increasing usage of recon units in combat...

Features:
  • University grants 'Exploration Heritage' promotion to recon built in city
  • Every turn, EH-promo'd recon units (pre-paratrooper) with full HP are granted 50% of their distance to capital as XP
  • recon XP pool must be > 0
  • recon XP pool = (civ's # of discovered land plots) - (the sum of all XP carried by their active recon units)
  • EH promotion removed from paratrooper and above; no bonus XP after commando
For background reference, see discussion at: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/better-recon-mod-snippets.660284/

edit: v46 update

parking this thought here until I have time to revisit this in modbuddy -- in my current game, "exploration heritage" is granting bonus XP (if any is available, after the revealed tiles check) to recon units when they are upgraded, and not just to newly created recon units -- Not game-breaking, and is applied symmetrically for all players, but is not intended: will update eventually (probably end-of-year with my current irl workload, though it may be a trivial fix for those with existing knowledge of the relevant lua hooks).

If any users of this mod have the time and knowledge, please post your fix and I will update the resource. Thanks!

Tekamthi updated Exploration Heritage (VP) with a new update entry:

revised/rebuilt -- version numbering matching VP's current release (this would otherwise be v2)

prev version of this mod was broken in current VP, and too simplistic in its approach to the recon XP problem. High-level recon units can still be reacquired after loss, but require combat; they're no longer auto-granted XP.

v37 functionality:
  • University grants EH promotion to recon built in city
  • EH-promo'd recon (pre-paratrooper) are granted 10% of unused recon XP pool after combat
  • recon XP pool works as before (total discovered plots - total XP of player's recon units)...

Hi, I'm getting this error when trying to open or unpack the .zip file. I'm liking your concepts of buffing recon units with this mod and the Counter-reconaissance mod.

its my mistake: you must use 7zip to open these files OR rename the extension to .civ5mod and place in mods folder

this site used to refuse uploads with the .civ5mod extension so it was common workaround to just rename these to .zip -- but some archive software like windows default unzipper don't understand this... anyway the site now accepts the native extension, I will upload future versions with .civ5mod, but you will still need 7zip to extract outside of using the native civ 5 mod unpacker

I think the recon XP re-distribution mechanism in v37 is still not ideal.

For users of this mod, what would you think if it were just 5 XP per turn on following conditions? (Alternatively maybe some small % of XP pool):
  • unit has promo as per v37 (maybe move promo up from university?)
  • unit has full HP
  • recon XP pool is not empty (still using the same method: recon xp pool = discovered land plots - all existing recon unit XP)
it won't be as easy to get back to high level XP, but still something, vs nothing in base VP
