pillaging, plain and simple. I focus on strategic resources, luxuries, and irrigated tiles. This will drain your opponents econ., and starve his cities as well. Very effective strategy, IMO.

They're also good for scouting. Not only can you make out your enemy's front line troops, you can see what's coming up behind that mountain over there.

I voted for sometimes: they have their uses, but only in certain circumstances.

I have actually only built an explorer twice. Both were not useful. They come too late to really make a difference as far as scouting goes.


I'm sure in some scenarios they are very helpful, such as an expand to the americas scenario.

By scouting, I meant scouting out the enemy's units, seeing his weak points, and determining what reinforcements were coming up.

I agree, by the time the Explorer comes around, you should know the whole world map. (At least in PTW.)

I voted "I never use explorers" - I've only ever used them once ,during a TETurkhan game to explore the New World. In normal games, though, I never have.

When preparing for a massive invasion of an AI, I occasionally use them, most likely when I have a core city that can crank them out quickly. While useful for Scouting and Pillaging, I also like to run them around in groups subduing resistors.

ur missing out on a cheap unit that can throttle an enemies resource and disconnect the capitol...if u have the military acadamy u can make an army of explores (i use conquistidors)
and completely cut off the capitol in one turn. They are cheap, usually takes 1 turn to make them
