Extradition Request for Convicted Rapist Roman Polanski Denied

I thought it was ok for money to flee to Switzerland to avoid the American system?

But really, this is ok with me as the "victim" has already said she doesn't really care, and i would feel the same way if it weren't such a famous case.

I dont recall her saying she "doesnt care" (and why is victim in quotation marks? 13 year old being drugged and sodomized isnt a victim in your eyes?) but that she doesnt want to reopen old wounds. It's not that she "doesnt care".

originally they planned on him doin the 90 day "study" followed by deportation? So all this over 48 days he didn't stay in the study because the authorities let him go after 42? Sounds like it wasn't only them ferners treating him with kid gloves...

Pretty much. It sounds like he got off easy initially, it blew up in the DA and Judge's faces when people heard about the sweetheart deal, and the Judge tried to act tough by throwing in a voluntary deportation (?) order and recommitting him for the final 48 days.

Polanski nonetheless should not have fled, but I think the worst injustice was not actually punishing him 30 years ago.

so the deportation deal came after he was let go 42 days into the "observation" period and in response to the public outcry? Okay, I'm getting the picture now. Unless the guy has no soul, he's been living a long time with his past BS - nobody gets off totally free. I just hope the victim has found a way to free herself...

Basically his punishment amounted to exile from the United States for the past 3 decades and a recent dragging of his name (rightfully) through the mud.

Time to teach those Swiss a lesson about harboring terrorists, get to invading, Obama!

and gaddafi just ended his war on them. those poor guys never get a break.

I say expel the Swiss embassy and lock out all Swiss passports until they reconsider.

personally, i'd like to see european countries not extraditing to the usa untill they extradit those cia kidnappers to italy.

I'm unhappy with the decision, but I don't think it was legally wrong to reject the request. It baffles me why the US refused to turn over the requested documents. Switzerland had already signaled their willingness to cooperate (unlike certain other countries) by arresting him in the first place (if they wanted to treat him better due to his stardom, why arrest him at all?)

I am going to endorse an invasion of Switzerland now.

Can we at least stop him from making movies? I'd rather watch something by Uwe Boll than Polanski's crap.

Yeah. Good luck with that ever happening. Some extradtions are more equal than others to misquote Animal Farm.

Absolutely ridiculous decision. I honestly don't think it matters whether he's served his sentence already or not -- he should have to come back to the States to be sentenced like anyone else. They could let him go on the spot, or send him to prison until he dies, but it's our call. Not Switzerland's.

That's a little bit harsher than I was thinking. But I would at the very least cease extraditing anyone to Switzerland, and freeze any law enforcement ties or exercises that we have with them in the meantime. Probably add some seriously harsh regulations on Americans using Swiss banks while we're at it, too. (It's past time we cracked down on tax evaders, anyway, and from what I've heard, what we did a few months ago was insufficient for doing so, even though it ticked the Swiss off an awful lot)

It is Switzerland's decision whether to extradite him or not. They simply exercised their right. You can fret about it, but that's all you can do.

Please, go ahead. I am sure you don't need Switzerland's cooperation in tracking terrorist money transfers or other forms of help they provide.

Oh, you should then extend the ban also on the other European countries which refuse to arrest/extradite him. You know, countries like France or Germany whose help you don't need either :)

Something tells me that Switzerland cares more about the European Union market, in which France has more say than the US.
