This is the Foreign Ministry discussion on what to do if someone requests our help in an alliance. There are several continental wars going on, for example France + Germany vs Persia and Persia + Rome vs Germany. This means someone is likely to come calling, asking us to take up the war against their opponent.

Rome is currently under discussion as a potential target. In our 5BC quest for world domination, we need to trim back Rome and Persia, and then cycle through our neighbors picking off cities with resources we can colonize and preventing further settlement.

If we're not interested in a diplomatic win, we could clean off the continent, post a shore patrol, and cruise. Then we can build a navy and take on the other continent in an amphibious landing.

But back to the current question, aside from Rome do we want any more wars right now? Do we try to charge the others something of value to beat up on the opponent we want to have anyway? Share your thoughts!

If Persia comes calling for an alliance against Germany, I say we take it. Germany is weak, and we could use any newly built units to get experience picking off obsolete German units. Other than fighting Germany, i don't think we should sign any other alliances.

I agree with Greekguy, that only if Germany is the whipping boy should we get involved. Since a war with Rome is looming on the horizon it would not be wise to get in one with Persia.

We're obviously not going to sign an alliance with Rome.

I would prefer not to help Persia against Germany if it makes Persia stronger or distracts us from the war with Rome. An alliance will also lock us into a 20 turn deal which could cause war weariness to become a problem. If however Persia has Germany on the ropes, I would prefer we razed those German cities on our southern borders rather than let Persia have them as our borders should now expand over them (pic below - current predicted borders in solid line, dotted when Priapos and Berlin expand to level 4). I don't think anyone would offer us enough to make it worthwhile for us to be locked into a 20 turn war so would prefer to work independently so we can control when we finish.

Persia will have to be our target after Rome. Once the Romans are reduced, Persia will be our strongest rivals on the continent and appear to have started their own war against the civs we have already weakened (France and Germany). If they take all those cities things could get difficult.

Alliances with Civs on the other continent to keep them at war may be a possibility. But I feel we are in danger of having a runaway Japan and it would be better to have 2 Civs sharing the continent (Babylon is effectively out of it) rather than 1 stong one, therefore no war. Again we could give our selves war weariness problems. If we have a real problem with Japan, we may have to consider getting the other Civs to dogpile them, and that would need alliances.

To summarise: no alliances unless necessary for our own survival, I prefer to work independently. Unless of course it's a really super dooper, once in a lifetime, not to be missed, I really can't belive they'd give us all that  deal.
