Facebook

Maybe not, but I can Facebook message virtually everyone I interact with on a regular basis. I don't know everybody's email address. What Facebook really helps with are people I need to talk to for whatever reason but don't talk to enough to know their email address or cell phone number.

I'm on it. Don't really use it actively though but I have gotten in touch with some people I haven't had any contact with in long while.

I joined the group.

Facebook can either be an incredibly useful tool or a massive waste of time.

Well, probably about 95% of the people I interact with on a regular basis go to my school, and I can look up their emails using their name.

I'm not really arguing against facebook, but using it as a messaging platform for people you know enough to have as facebook friends, but not well enough to have any other method of communication with, seems pretty trivial.

No way. I'm Facebook friends with literally hundreds of people I don't talk to on a regular basis. This must be the case for most people on Facebook too, since I can't really imagine that most people talk to 400+ people on a regular basis.

It's almost like *le gaspe* MSN!

...

Which already comes on your computer when you first install windows.

Except that people I want to talk to don't use MSN and do use Facebook, and it doesn't solve the problem of contacting people I don't normally talk to.

It is what it is; a useful and convenient way to keep in touch with people. Nothing more.

QFT.

I have sisters and brothers in law that live an hour away from me, and I have old friends from summer camp that I never see most of the year but still love. Facebook allows me to contact these people occasinally. It's not useful for much else.

If you know someone's MSN address, you know their email too...

Zelig, the appeal of facebook is best understood from the perspective of lazy people like me who are incredibly popular and couldn't possibly be bothered to manage everyone's contact info in some sort of a dynamic contact management system.

You'd be surprised how many people you know and what sorts of interesting things they are up to (travelling to places, taking pictures, getting married, getting divorced, eating a pie)

Facebook is kind of like going for a virtual walk, but the only people you run into are people that you already know, in some way.

"Hey, that's my friend's neighbour's sister, who I briefly talked to at that party 6 years ago. I wonder what she's doing in Mongolia."

Ok, here's a question. Does anyone think there will be a "next big thing" in terms of social networking online? I mean, first we had myspace (which is still going strong) and now we have facebook (which I feel is becoming too much like myspace).

Does anyone know or think there will a facebook killer soon?

It's pretty useless. Only people I talk to on a normal basis anyway actually posts on my wall. 95% of my "friends" are just people I know in passing and have no real desire to ever see them ever again. I have 89289739738973973 invitations to crappy applications. The only time I ever get invites are when the person lives across the country.

In fact the only real news I've gotten from it is that my niece is apparently doing "artistic" nude modeling now:sad:

ugh

Facebook is already being diluted by other 2.0 sites, such as Twitter and whatnot. However, most of these sites are compatible with one-another; if you twitter, it will automagically update your facebook status; if you post a blog entry, it will create a note in Facebook, etc etc etc.

The next big thing will be [wiki]Web 3.0[/wiki] based.
