Any ideas what the faction icons represent ?
Some are pretty obvious, others not so much
Brasilia - Its an ascending star (or rocket), also the ascending star reminds the Brasilia (the real one) seal. wiki
ARC - The All seeing eye is a nod to their spy UA and maybe the dollar bill
Franco Iberia - An stylized fleur-de-lis, symbol of France
PAU - An stylized hieroglyph, symbol of Egypt
Kavithan - An stylized lotus, symbol of Buddhism
    Now the hard ones
Slavic Federation - The laurel wreath is more Roman then Russian, although the lower part reminds an cogwhell, maybe a nod to production and the hammer on old Sovietic flag, the ribbon around the star may be a reference to their satellites UA too
Polystralia - The 3 dots and 3 arrows (?) represent their commerce bonus ? trade routes coming out of cities ? I have no idea
PAC - I will not even try anything on this one
    Thoughts ?

I thought the Brasilian logo sort of represented a very stylized Cristo Redentor. Plus fluff.

The PAU's logo looks like crossed wheat stalks under the sun, sort of communist like the PAC's, which reminds me of the seals of countries such as China.

Considering the SlavFed's logo also has socialist vibes, there's a lot of such around, it seems. :p

    Brasilia: flaming sword: military bonus
Slavic fed: laurel wreath and circle are both Orbiting the cross: orbital bonus
PAU: sun and grain: growth bonus
    ARC:all seeing eye:spy bonus
FI:fleur delis: french culture related bonus.

Polystralias 3 dots are probably the trade bonus

Kavithas/PAC doesn't make much sense: growing expansion v large round wonder

I love ARC's sinister icon, and SF's retro one.
It's strange, but as an Australian, there IS something recognisably... Australian?... about Polystralia's icon. (Feel free to disagree with me here guys.) Maybe it's the green-and-gold colouring (that our sport teams always have) or the three stars vaguely reminding me of the southern cross; even the three boomerang shaped whatits reminding me of the mask on the Torres Strait flag.

Anyway as a general remark, I suspect it is going to take me a very long time to memorise all the unit and building icons-- some of them are very abstract! Still, they're better than the Civ V circular images: they were beautifully illustrated and would have made great posters but became a blurry busy mess when reduced to a few dozen pixels across.....

Wait, that's it! Google "Cricket Australia Logo" to find a surprisingly Polystralian-looking icon!

I don't think the 3 dots in the Polystralian Icon stand for the Southern Cross. After all it's only 3 dots, not 4 or 5.

It reminds me of 3 shells and maybe 3 pearls, but I guess it could be anything.

Edit: Also, someone made some high-resolution versions of these icons: http://imgur.com/a/Mv1SY

I realized when they revealed Polystralia weeks ago that the icon represents three people holding hands. I imagine that way since I was thinking for a backstory once I play as Hutama.

They might represent Maritime SEA, Australia, and the Pacific Islands in my perspective. And it makes sense, being the diplomatic and trading sponsor. Cooperation is the key to good trade after all. The dots are just stylized heads with the boomerang things being stylized bodies.

I can't unsee that Polystralia's logo looks like some creepy clown (tilted at an angle or flipped over). The three dots are eyes and a nose.

SF's logo is probably about classical imperialism brought to the space age.
Polystralia's logo seems to say "reach out everywhere"
KP's logo appears very devotional to me.

Brasilia is actually the one I find hard to read. Obviously it's about reaching out for the stars... but somehow that doesn't seem to nail it.

The PAC symbol seems vaguely inspired by Chinese decorative symbols. For example, the one below is very common:

The Kavithan Protectorate symbol to me is reminiscent of the Om, and certain types of stupas/pagodas.

Can't agree with you there. Seems much more like a shooting star.

In heraldic terms, a flaming sword is not necessarily about militarism, because it can also represent justice, revenge or purification.

I rather think PAC's symbol is the rising sun, where the lines on the bottom half are the horizon or clouds. It also looks like the mirages you see when the sun is rising/sinkig
This signify its geographical location in the east (at least in a euro-centric way, and when they are still on earth). It is the same idea where japan got its name (meaning the origin of the sun) and its flag.

Actually, the original Soviet flag had a wreath of wheat. The flag was later simplified, and the design was reused in the Soviet coat of arms below. The flags of some Soviet republics also featured a wreath of wheat or laurels.
