Failed Installation

i receive the following error when i attempt to install disk1.

"A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted"

I receive the error during the civ4 directx version installation attempt after it informs me i dont have the correct dx installed. I believe i do, as the following info shows:

I thought perhaps the possibility exists that my nvidia driver is N/A for the WHQL and that is preventing the continued installation of civ4 ?

I have read a vast majority of this thread and there are other individuals with the same system/hardware who say the game works for them though some have other issues related to post installation probs. This makes me believe that my problem could simply be a software setting though i know not which. Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

Can you just click some sort of "install anyway" button?

If not, you can say "no" to the directX installation, and download the directx install direct from Microsoft instead (I think its the "december update for Directx9.0c")

cant 'install anyway'. install, readme, exit are the only options available to me. after clicking install it notifies my off my need for directx install and goes right into the attempt.

i dled and installed the runtime update for directx9.0c, called dxwebsetup.

still receive the "A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted" error and it exits installation. i can't seem to go 'around' it.

There should be a "Cancel" button in the "DX9.0c" install prompt. Press it and the install goes along without it.

In that case you may need the SDK dll, for which you have two options, either get this, or follow instructions here.

However, I suspect you have a faulty disc. Lots and lots of faulty discs around. It doesn't help to that end that Take-Two decided to employ deliberate trashing of the CD/DVD error recovery systems with the Macrovision SafeDisc backup prevention. Some of the faulty discs might have worked without that unnecessary additional burden on data integrity.

I notice that your graphics driver is ancient. Try updating the driver and see if it installs. If it's not installing DX from the disc, you can grab from the Microsoft site.

If it still doesn't work, there might be a issue with the disk.

thx for the effort in helping me .... i dled the direct 9 full runtimes and after it unzips all 2298 files it informs me "the file Setup.exe does not have a valid signature, and cannot be trusted. Setup will exit". this is for the dxsdk_october2005 file Arkenton posted above.

If i cancel the directx install from the civ4 cd it exits civ4 installation completely.

Is there a way to turn off the valid signature searching portion of winxp sp2 ?

Something is missing in the crypto modules of your Windows, or they aren't registered properly. Try installing the latest Windows Installer (I think the version is 3.1-something) through Windows Update/Microsoft Update. It could be that the root certificates/digital signature verification components are in another part as well. Those always so helpfull M$ error messages...

There could be a dozen reasons why it fails, but the quick and dirty solution is really to just bypass the driver signing check, instructions here.
