You can also save in other ways by taking advantage of conquered AI holy sites and the grand master's chapel:
    1) You have to garrison less units as you can call them up on demand as needed. This saves you both the production to build them and the gold it would cost to maintain them.
    2) I never build walls and rarely have any problems as I can faith summon units as needed. That saves allot of production also. Note: If you use Limes this statement is not valid.

Nobody is doing that. We're just talking about using faith. That's why I brought up founding a religion to be optional.

And faith is not really that flexible for the same reason why buying units outright or hard building is not useful. Upgrading or Magnus is just far more efficient. Yes, faith is very good, but it's not enough to be a substitute so much that you're crippling your early game economy to do it for.

That also drives home the point that being good at that = good at everything.

Maybe it was a fluke but I played Rome twice with 12 civs and both times I was able to get GoH. I figure you go through civics so quick that you get the faith quicker than everyone else.

No mention of Khmer in this thread. Poor Khmer. Totally forgotten.

Oh right, they're not too bad. Those aqueducts are not a bad idea, especially if you use it to form a triangle. They're more awkward to play.

Personally, religion has bugged me in Civ6 right from the start. And I think it's the fundamental, lazy, and flawed approach Firaxis took to it. Religion has always been one of the most complex, labrynthine, contentious, self-divisive, self-contradictory, socially-defining, artistically- and-legally-inspiring, culturally-, nationally, and militarily-rallying, and persuasive forces, but also one of the most abused by those in positions of power for ulterior game and one of the biggest that social and philosophical rebels define themselves by challenging and opposing, in all of world history. But Firaxis waters down and dumbs down this immensely powerful, driving force and undercurrent of all human history and endeavour to a phoned-in and cartoonish sub-game with less relevance, arguably, than some other victory or other aspects of the game, especially in relatively to the subject's monumental historical role.

You said "kind of" in your OP but I'd consider Indonesia faith based for sure. They are primarily about living on the coast, but they are built for religious victory and even their naval gameplay helps them with this. Their unique frigates can be used to escort apostles and missionaries around the map very quickly, and no embark or disembark costs mean they can get around faster.

I mean, if I mentioned Khmer, I'd also have to mention Scythia, as they generate faith faster than Khmer.
