Does any one know if the Patch will be released on the same day for the App Store as the PC ?

Steam: Hello, I've just updated Civ 5
Me: *whoop* I can plays America again

Civ: Hello, I am version 1.0.3.18
Steam: Haha got you, it was a 0MB update

:crazyeye:

So what about the fall patch: will it be released at the same time the pc version comes out ? And when will we get the 'hotfix' one?

Any timeline for the hot fix? My multiplayer game partners are getting antsy.

Where is this patch Aspyr? 7 days is just not good enough. Between yourselves and Firaxis releasing SP focused dlc's with little MP afterthought...you are slowly killing off the Civ MP community year by year...

The issue isn't Aspyr; it's that Firaxis gives Aspyr the patch to port essentially simultaneously with releasing it on Steam to Windows users.

Meanwhile, in the real world:

1. Aspyr will not, and should not, port untested and unfinished code, so they have to wait for the released code.

2. Firaxis wants to get updated versions out as fast as possible to their largest user base. They are not going to sit around waiting for Aspyr plus Apple to implement, test and release the updates before releasing the Windows/Steam product.

3. If you were Windows users, you would complain equally bitterly if you discovered that your update schedule was dependent on the availability of a third party's programming resources, and the speed of Apple's AppStore approvals process. And there would be far more of you doing the complaining!

Some companies (Blizzard comes to mind) have figured out how to do parallel development on multiple platforms; others could follow suit. But this requires a commitment from day 1 of design to isolate platform-specific from platform-independent features.

In the meantime, I just don't think it's appropriate to get impatient with Aspyr when they've only had the patch code for a little over a week.

I thought you were trying to apportion "blame" for the delay, which would be pointless since it is a natural consequence of the structure of Firaxis' development processes.

I think we are agreeing that it's a waste of effort to complain that things are the way they are.

More or less.. I do wish to assign blame where it is due, which would be to the persons who decided on Firaxis' development process so many years ago :)

Blame doesn't come into it. Check the dates.

Firaxis was founded in 1996, just as Windows 95 hit the streets, and Apple took a nose dive. Why build a new games software business to cater for two operating systems, one of which had a tiny market share. Apple didn't take gaming seriously, and looked quite likely to simply disappear.

Blizzard was founded in 1991. At that time, it wasn't clear which way the desktop PC market would fall. Apple still had major market share. Cross platform development was a sensible choice. The wonder is that they stuck with Mac OS through so many lean years.

There's an opportunity to start a new development process with each new application/game. It would simply be nice if others started attempting the multi platform approach.

I have to give credit to EA here, for at least originally planning to have SimCity be simultaneous multi-platform. Unfortunately that was ultimately deprioritized, but at least it was on the radar.

I disagree. Most development shops are prisoners of their history. They have hardware, software, tools, engineers, QA and test personnel, marketeers and sales channel relationships which can all lock the organisation into a platform. From code to retail shelf, the Mac software environment has been completely different from the Windows one.

At what point would you consider it would have been appropriate to retool the entire Firaxis organisation to go after 5% of the installed desktop base? It's much more cost effective to just outsource the conversion to a specialist Mac shop, and the only downside is that a few of your customers feel like second class citizens. I doubt if Firaxis loses any sleep over that.

They *have*, of course, had to move to new platforms, but it's the mobile/touch revolution that has enforced, and financed that, through the sheer volume of tablets and phones. As well as being a major new opportunity, this change poses a huge threat to their traditional platform. Mac sales volumes could never have justified such an organisational shift.

The game isn't any cheaper for OSX than it is for PC yet we Mac users (i play on PC and Mac) must suffer with not being able to play MP as a result. (There have been 5 games in the lobby the last 3 days). If Aspyr will always have the patches after they are released for Windows then we should pay less. Windows users could happily wait if Firaxis just told them the release date was a little later to incorporate OSX players. What this demonstrates is that Firaxis doesn't care about OSX players (probably as we are the minority) and despite Aspyr making a cut from them porting the game to OSX they have no power. This game should be half price what it is for PC as a result and nobody cares about Aspyr since they are porting 100s of games I doubt their cut is very much at all...1-5% I'm guessing?

Firaxis as a company have been a mess. They have hired badly and had a high turnover of staff. Their offices for a start are in the wrong location in order to hire gaming talent imo. No offence to people from Baltimore but its hardly San Francisco as regards up and coming game developers. Civilization V was lead developed by a guy who hated multiplayer and the game in Single Player suffers greatly as a result as a lot of it just isn't thought through enough. There are so many holes and unbalances to pick at its tiring. The biggest crime of all is how the maps became so 'luck-based' comparing to Civ 4 and Civ 3. These would have been easily addressed with altering map scripts for bias and making NW's optional etc...but not one patch has addressed these issues. BNW has furthered these problems and an FFA game online is extremely luck orientated now, even with players of quite differening skills. Teamers are a joke. BNW was the nail in the coffin for me. Look out for mine and Earthstrikes mod coming this fall which will address all of this. Probably only be able to play it on PC though won't you.... :(

"Windows users could happily wait ..."?

You think many, many patient Windows users can wait .... but you and a couple of other Mac users can't? And then you tell us the game is rubbish anyway. I'm having trouble following your logic.
