im playing the windows version and i keep getting famines in cities. how do i fix this? and i keep losing money too, despite setting up tax collectors. how do i correct this?

Hi, RJB, welcome to the civ1 forum.

Your two problems are related. If you're setting up a lot of tax collectors, that means you're taking workers off the fields, and thus generating less food.

Have a look here to learn about the different terrain types. If your cities are starving, you'll want to allocate more workers to tiles like grassland, rivers, fish, etc. Irrigating will also help generate more food for certain terrain types (such as grassland and plains). Build roads on desert, grassland, and plains to generate more trade. Adjust the tax rate to convert a larger percentage of trade into gold.

Hope that helps get you started.

In case you mean "famine" as in the actual disaster as opposed to simple starvation, that, like other disaster events, is random and can be countered with granaries. Granaries will not fix starvation, however.

As for losing money, you've built too many structures. Most of them will not help you enough to offset their building and maintenance costs and the remainder become useful with larger empires that have sufficient tax bases.

If you post a copy of your .MAP and .SVE files, we can maybe take a look and offer suggestions...

Your people are not happy.
To make them happy you can make temples, cathedrals or put military units in you cities or up the lux slider.
If you post a save we can help you better, so we know what the problem is.

Come to think of it. When I was young and my english wasn't that good. "mayor flees in panic" I read that as if major evacuations (flees) in panic.
