Total noob question...What is the fat cross exactly? I mean I know what it is, but can someone show me on a screenie what it looks like?

It looks like a big fat cross! It is all the land tiles a citizen in that city can work. You don't start out with a big fat cross, though. Must get culture up to 10 (normal speed).

not yet BFC:

The BFC is simply the land area that a city can eventually work. Other tiles may be within cultural borders, but only the tiles two spaces or less from the city tile (except the diagonals) can be worked by the city's citizens and be productive.

Tiles outside of the BFC can be improved by a settler and any resource exploited there can be accessed if it is connected to the trade network, but there is no production (food, hammers, commerce) gained from such a tile.

Thanks for your help. I had an idea, but did not know exactly what it looked like
