Favorite National Anthems?

I could've sworn this was the national anthem of France.

I like the US anthem, but the lyrics can be difficult to remember. Especially for popstars about to sing it for the super bowl.

La Marseilles and Star Spangled Banner by a long way .

Mine , Advance Australia fair is really lame ( it contains the word "girt" ) , but Australians aren't too big on the whole singing thing , and when we sort of half assed mumble this insipid tune , in many ways it's quite appropriate .

Anything but the UK's. It should be Jerusalem damn it!!!

The russian one is of course on top. The second best is more difficult. The melody to the British one is good, but the lyrics are innapropiate for a national anthem. The French(unfortunately rather insane lyrics), Italian and the East German ones are also beautiful.

I agree, seems the socialist countries had the better anthems, judging from the GDR and USSR.

Out of those in current use, I'd nominate Italy.

Star-sprangled banner is okay musically, but the lyrics are awful.

I have to admit to liking the Finnish one. Kind of shares the characteristics of the Swedish one. They sort of need to be interpreted on a slightly melancholic note to work as music. I have heard both botched terribly when this was not understood and the band tried to play the usual national-anthem marche militaire thing.:)

Advance Australia Fair, now there's a weird anthem :p

Mine , Advance Australia fair is really lame ( it contains the word "girt" ) , but Australians aren't too big on the whole singing thing , and when we sort of half assed mumble this insipid tune , in many ways it's quite appropriate.

The instrumental version of Advance Australia Fair sounds alright enough. But combined with the words it leaves you underwhelmed.

It arguably sounds better if sung to a different tune...

Our unofficial anthem is, of course, Waltzing Matilda. When overseas relatives ask about the Australian national anthem, I sing this.

Anyway, yeah, the Hymn of the Soviet Union takes the first prize (modern lyrics < 1977 lyrics < 1944 lyrics)

Some honourable mentions: I've already mentioned Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in previous threads. Qaumi Tarana (Pakistan) is pretty good as well.

Here's a rock remix version:

Jana Gana Mana (India) was composed by Sir Rabindranath Tagore. It doesn't sound martial, and therefore one of the more unusual anthems (along with Bangladesh's, also by Tagore). The lyrics praised God. Or George V, depending on who you ask.

The Korean anthems (both of them) aren't bad either.

Let me see, I love the national anthem of the five United Nation Secrity Council permanent members.

Here are the lyrics, I sorted and arranged them.

God Save the Queen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN9EC3Gy6Nk

God save our gracious Queen
Long live our noble Queen
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the Queen!
One realm of races four
Blest more and ever more
God save our land!
Home of the brave and free
Set in the silver sea
True nurse of chivalry
God save our land!

Of many a race and birth
From utmost ends of earth
God save us all!
Bid strife and hatred cease
Bid hope and joy increase
Spread universal peace
God save us all!

Star Spangled Banner

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAYPN-1Yjt0&feature=related

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

La Marseillaise

Allons enfants de la Patrie,
(Arise, children of the Fatherland,)
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
(The day of glory has arrived!)
Contre nous de la tyrannie,
(Against us of the tyranny)
L'étendard sanglant est levé, (bis)
(The bloody banner is raised, (repeat))
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
(Do you hear, in the countryside,)
Mugir ces féroces soldats ?
(The roar of those ferocious soldiers?)
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras
(They're coming right into your arms)
Égorger vos fils et vos compagnes !
(To slit off the throats your sons and your companions!)

Aux armes, citoyens,
(To arms, citizens,)
Formez vos bataillons,
(Form your battalions,)
Marchons, marchons !
(Let's march, let's march!)
Qu'un sang impur
(That a tainted blood)
Abreuve nos sillons !
(Water our furrows!)

Que veut cette horde d'esclaves,
(What does this horde of slaves,)
De traîtres, de rois conjurés ?
(Of traitors and conjured kings want?)
Pour qui ces ignobles entraves,
(For whom are these vile chains,)
Ces fers dès longtemps préparés ? (bis)
(These long-prepared irons? (repeat))
Français, pour nous, ah ! quel outrage
(Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage)
Quels transports il doit exciter !
(What fury it must arouse!)
C'est nous qu'on ose méditer
(It is us they dare plan)
De rendre à l'antique esclavage !
(To return to the old slavery!)

Aux armes, citoyens,
(To arms, citizens,)
Formez vos bataillons,
(Form your battalions,)
Marchons, marchons !
(Let's march, let's march!)
Qu'un sang impur
(That a tainted blood)
Abreuve nos sillons !
(Water our furrows!)

Quoi ! des cohortes étrangères
(What! Foreign cohorts)
Feraient la loi dans nos foyers !
(Would make the law in our homes!)
Quoi ! Ces phalanges mercenaires
(What! These mercenary phalanxes)
Terrasseraient nos fiers guerriers ! (bis)
(Would strike down our proud warriors! (repeat))
Grand Dieu ! Par des mains enchaînées
(Great God ! By chained hands)
Nos fronts sous le joug se ploieraient
(Our brows would yield under the yoke)
De vils despotes deviendraient
(Vile despots would have themselves)
Les maîtres de nos destinées !
(The masters of our destinies!)

Aux armes, citoyens,
(To arms, citizens,)
Formez vos bataillons,
(Form your battalions,)
Marchons, marchons !
(Let's march, let's march!)
Qu'un sang impur
(That a tainted blood)
Abreuve nos sillons !
(Water our furrows!)

Tremblez, tyrans et vous perfides
(Tremble, tyrants and you traitors)
L'opprobre de tous les partis,
(The shame of all parties,)
Tremblez ! vos projets parricides
(Tremble! Your parricidal schemes)
Vont enfin recevoir leurs prix ! (bis)
(Will finally receive their reward! (repeat))
Tout est soldat pour vous combattre,
(Everyone is a soldier to combat you)
S'ils tombent, nos jeunes héros,
(If they fall, our young heroes,)
La terre en produit de nouveaux,
(The earth will produce new ones,)
Contre vous tout prêts à se battre !
(Ready to fight against you!)

Aux armes, citoyens,
(To arms, citizens,)
Formez vos bataillons,
(Form your battalions,)
Marchons, marchons !
(Let's march, let's march!)
Qu'un sang impur
(That a tainted blood)
Abreuve nos sillons !
(Water our furrows!)

Français, en guerriers magnanimes,
(Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors,)
Portez ou retenez vos coups !
(You bear or hold back your blows!)
Épargnez ces tristes victimes,
(You spare those sorry victims,)
À regret s'armant contre nous. (bis)
(Who arm against us with regret. (repeat))
Mais ces despotes sanguinaires,
(But not these bloodthirsty despots,)
Mais ces complices de Bouillé,
(These accomplices of Bouillé,)
Tous ces tigres qui, sans pitié,
(All these tigers who, mercilessly,)
Déchirent le sein de leur mère !
(Rip their mother's breast!)

Aux armes, citoyens,
(To arms, citizens,)
Formez vos bataillons,
(Form your battalions,)
Marchons, marchons !
(Let's march, let's march!)
Qu'un sang impur
(That a tainted blood)
Abreuve nos sillons !
(Water our furrows!)

Amour sacré de la Patrie,
(Sacred love of the Fatherland,)
Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs
(Lead, support our avenging arms)
Liberté, Liberté chérie,
(Liberty, cherished Liberty,)
Combats avec tes défenseurs ! (bis)
(Fight with thy defenders! (repeat))
Sous nos drapeaux que la victoire
(Under our flags, shall victory)
Accoure à tes mâles accents,
(Hurry to thy manly accents,)
Que tes ennemis expirants
(That thy expiring enemies,)
Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire !
(See thy triumph and our glory!)

Aux armes, citoyens,
(To arms, citizens,)
Formez vos bataillons,
(Form your battalions,)
Marchons, marchons !
(Let's march, let's march!)
Qu'un sang impur
(That a tainted blood)
Abreuve nos sillons !
(Water our furrows!)

(English translation)
An unbreakable union of free republics,
Great Rus' has welded forever to stand!
Created in struggle by the will-of-the-people,
The united, the mighty Soviet Union.

Sing to the Soviet motherland, home of the free!
Bulwark of people, in brotherhood strong!
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
It leads us to the triumph of Communism.

Through tempests the sun of freedom shone to us,
And the great Lenin lighted us the way.
He raised peoples to the righteous cause,
Inspired us to labour and to acts of heroism.

Sing to the Soviet motherland, home of the free!
Bulwark of people, in brotherhood strong!
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
It leads us to the triumph of Communism.

In the victory of the immortal ideas of Communism
We see the future of our country,
And to the Red banner of our glorious Fatherland
We shall always be selflessly true.

Sing to the Soviet motherland, home of the free!
Bulwark of people, in brotherhood strong!
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
It leads us to the triumph of Communism.

I would rather take the Soviet Union's one than the modern Russian's one, as I enjoyed the old one's tone. The contemporary is too familiar with other Europeans.

I agree, seems the socialist countries had the better anthems, judging from the GDR and USSR.

Of course, just because the Europeans' are too peaceful (at this moment), the "Ode to Joy" is the most typical one among all.

me me fa so so fa me re...

Ode to Joy

(Latin version)
Est Europa nunc unita
et unita maneat;
una in diversitate
pacem mundi augeat.

Semper regant in Europa
fides et iustitia
et libertas populorum
in maiore patria.

Cives, floreat Europa,
opus magnum vocat vos.
Stellae signa sunt in caelo
aureae, quae iungant nos.

(English version)
Europe is united now
United that it may remain;
Our unity in diversity
May contribute to world peace.

May there forever reign in Europe
Faith and justice and Freedom
For all its many people
In a greater motherland

Citizens, Europe will flourish,
A great task calls on to you.
The stars in the night sky
Are the symbols that unite us.

HALT!!!
I have just changed my decision after this:

I think that also worth mentioning, maybe.

I'm under the impression that God Save the Queen has some four or five verses.

I'm pretty sure the Russians kept the tune, but wrote some new lyrics.:)

Anthem: USSR

Patriotic song: No motherland without you (DPRK)

Godwynn, you're a cool guy and all, but the next time you quote something by Mireille Mathieu, it will be my duty to choke you to death while you burn in a fire :)

You're the one quoting something by Mireille Mathieu, I just posted it.
