Favorite National Anthems?

USA #1 not even a question. But not when those damned pop divas do it. When I listen to my Star Spangled Banner it has to be with a full choir.

That's what a real national anthem sounds like, sun.

We had the most gold medals at the last Olympics. :)
That was the Chinese, man. If you're so deluded as to count the Winter Olympics count as a real Olympics, you have problems that can't be solved over the internet.

Word. As far as second-rate versions go, this one is pretty interesting. Dude has a grating voice though:

Since the USSR's National Hymn has been beaten to death like an errant draught animal on a collective farm, it's only suitable to move on to the next best thing, patriotic songs and marches.

This one is also Russian, but I believe was written by a Bulgarian during the 1877 war, and is entitled "Farewell to Slavianka". A bit more stirring as far as the tempo is concerned

This is another Russian one that dates back to the time of Peter the Great and the Preobrazhensky Regiment. It's used in the "Goldeneye" movie and is also oddly enough, used as the march of the Royal Marines

I agree, seems the socialist countries had the better anthems, judging from the GDR and USSR.

Out of those in current use, I'd nominate Italy.

Star-sprangled banner is okay musically, but the lyrics are awful.

I never heard East Germany's anthem before, but it sounds good. The Germans should have made that their anthem after the second unification.

The USA anthem is like Layla or Stairway to Heaven. Great songs, probably the best of all time, but so overplayed that we are all sick of it.

Yeah! We need someone to do an acoustic version so that when it gets so overplayed that we're sick of it, someone can play the alternate version and we'll go "oh neat! it's the acoustic version! That's fairly new!" Once that gets overplayed too, though, then we're SOL.

At the risk of committing a political sin - I like the pre-45 German National Anthem. Was it banned or just studiously avoided?

The Aussie National Anthem is most definitely an embarrassment and the widely loved and accepted alternative is a song about a sheep thief who drowns himself rather than be caught by the police. Rather amusing and I'm sure it would be much more fun to sing at the Olympics!

Sans the Horst Wessel Lied, it's the same anthem as the current German one, except that instead of the first verse ("Deutschland über alles") the third verse is sung ("Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit"). The first verse is not banned AFAIK, but it's not considered the national anthem.

Are you talking the National Socialist die Fahne hoch or the first stanza of the Song of the Germans?

Deutschland uber alles. I thought the sentiment rather befitting of a national anthem and the tune is a cracker.

USSR #1, without a doubt

What is your favorite national anthem? When I ask about this I am referring to how much you like the song, not how much you like the country it comes from.
Mine is a toss-up between the US and Russia. I also like France's a lot as well.

Same answer as the last few times: Italy

France, easily. Incredible lyrics and sound. The Russian anthem is very impressive, sound-wise, but I don't know its lyrics and suspect I would disagree with them. Germany's anthem also gets high marks: the second verse (on the merits of German wine and women) amuses me, and the third is very nice. The UK would rank higher if it used "Rule Britannia". I suspect I'd be more fond of the US anthem if I didn't associate it with bigot redneck uber-patriots who are always screaming about the guvmint and watching Fox news.

Oh, can't forget --
