Other... We had this thread before, but this one has more options.

What's the other you voted for G-Man?

Without a doubt the best books I've read have been fantasy novels. My two favourite authors are J.R.R. Tolkien and Philip Pullman. The 'His dark materials' trilogy by Pullman was the best set of books I have ever read (the ending had me in tears, but I won't say whether they were joy or sadness. I even included the two main characters in the highly honourable position of: 'Sixchan's daydreams about killing "Sasami lemon"(shudder) writers).:)

Any of you read any alternative history? Generally in the sci-fi category but it's kind of a "what if" something in history turned out different? Come to think of it, that's kind of like a civ game. Harry Turtledove is one of the prime authors in this sub-genre with alternative history books related to the civil war, wwI, wwII, and another one co-written with Richard Dreyfuss (the actor)about a modern era America in which the American colonies stayed part of the British empire.

"I'm gonna live forever or die trying"

I think I'll make it my signature when I'll have 500 posts

Why 500?

Theres a book about the Normandy landings, sort of a what if scenario, where things dont go so good. I cant remember the damn title though... Also Operation Coronet and Olympic (invaision of japan) what ifs are good too.

To celebrate! It's a very nice number, 500. Much better then 73. I hate 73.

Thriller!!! theres no thriller there!!!

Tom Clancy all the way, im reading the Bear, Dragon and something else at the moment.

Im not sure what you call it, but im into books about teenagers who get into trouble, one of my favouries is by i think Micheal Coleman, its called 'tag', and its about them Tag Bombers in america, and one of his mates get involved, and he wants to join this bombing gang, where the leader is called 'alpha' and turns out that it is his sister.... wicked book.

I'm reading Catch-22 right now. Its an amazing book which really makes you think.

I voted for Horror, but its more a thriller sometimes fantasy even jus plain nonsence I read. But I must say Hannibal is a good book which should be read.:goodjob:

Hannibal IS good! All Thomas Harris is good... I haven't seen the movie, but I don't really care, movies are never as good as the books... except Green Mile maybe...

I like the "classics..." Literature I guess? Ya know, anything from Tolstoy and Bronte sisters, Kafka (not Kefka!), Melville, Doyle, Wilde, etc... Millions can't be wrong, or they wouldn't be "classics", eh? I also like SOME S/F & Fantasy... Just depends on who...

One does like the classics. There is nothing better than sitting down and reading 'The Prince', Aristophanes, Zola or Joyce, except maybe a spot of Gemmell or Fry. More fantasy than sci-fi, but don't read as much as I used to, mainly due to this darned site!
But one must concur with the judgement of many of the persons here on works of literary merit.
Catch-22 is very good, wrote a big paper on it once. The movie is quite nice too. The notion of Orr rowing to Sweden in a dinghy from the Med was excellent surreal and funny.
"Take him outside and shoot him"

If you read too much Tom Clancy, your skin will turn orange in hue and erupt in the most remarkable pustules, you will get hairs on your palms, you will start getting IDEAS, you will get ...'eunuchized', and then you will finally notice that he hasn't written a good book for a while, and go back to Red Storm Rising.:crazyeyes
