This past weekend I started playing the original Baldur's Gate, which I've started many times, but never completed. As I play, I can't get over how much I like the soundtrack. I like the soundtracks to most games, but this one just seems so perfect for the game. The only one I can think of that even comes close is Heroes of Might and Magic II with the opera (odd since I don't like opera).

    So what's your favourite?

Haven't played those games. I guess my favourite would be the simple but brilliant tunes of the Monkey Island games.

Morrowind has a very good score, but it's rather short.

A classic game with great music is Betrayal At Krondor - one of the finest RPGs ever created.

There are many other games that have great soundtracks (usually RPGs take the cake) but there are far too many to list.

    Command and Conquer games

I think it should be hands down, there.

I never paid attention to Might and Magic sound/ music.

I concur with Panzar75. Monkey Island is the best game music ever.

Because once you get the theme in your head, you'll never get it out. :crazyeye:

SMAC, if you include the atmospheric sound clips.

Tron, Doom, Dune 2 and Axis & Allies all had good scores in their days.

I've never really listened to game soundtracks. They all sound the same to me...

Ascendancy has the best score by far. The music is so perfect for the game, and even when it starts repeating it doesn't get old. They also managed to come up with theme music perfect for every species in the game, not an easy task with 20 or so races.

I'm one of those strange people who actually likes game music for its own sake. And there's a lot of good stuff out there, if you accept the limitations the composers have to work with. You can find the soundtrack to diablo2 over at blizzard's site, and there are a couple other companies that have offered their game soundtracks free for download. There was a site up for Marty O'Donnell, who did music for many of Bungie's games, but I can't find it now.

For the most part though, they sell alblums separately, and ones from foreign games are tough to find in the states. My personal favorites have to be Yasunori Mitsuda's work, but there are bunches of other great game composers out there. (Noriyuki Iwadare, Nobuo Uematsu, Yoko Shimomura, Hiroki Kikuta, and Koji Kondo to name a few. Even Yoko Kanno did the soundtracks for a couple)

That reminds me.. I got stuck in the dungeons under Candlekeep and never finished BG1 either. Ought to go back and fix that.
