Ok

Favourite governments? How do these work?

Let’s say, Egypt has a favourite government of... Theocracy. Dose that mean when Theocracy is researched, they will change to this Gov type and stick with it for the rest of the game, no matter what other types of Gov they researched?

Any thoughts....

Thanks

It has two effects:

1) Make it very likely for the civ to change to the government type set there, and stick with it until the borders expanded so much that democracy exceeds the "favorite" government type; namely, towards the end of the game, all governments switch to democracy.

2) Increases the diplomatic stance (makes it more positive) towards any civilization with that government type set. Say; America's favorite is democracy, so it'll have a relationship bonus towards other democracies, say, the English. Egypt has it set as despotism, so it'll have good relations with, say, the Aztecs.

Ok let me get this straight

If the newly researched Gov is better than the effect of their favourite one, then they will change to that new Gov type?

If this is so... is it even poss for them to change to their shunned Gov type if it better?

Thanks for the reply by the way, appreciated!

As far as I know, the shunned government will never be chosen by the AI. But this doesn't mean that the favorable one will definitely be chosen.

So, newly researched governments, if far better than the favorable one, will be chosen. However, the being "favorable" is a bonus for the government to be considered first, before the other options.

Russia, with no exceptions, has always been communist in my games, but some might choose democracy instead of republic.

Do you know of an easy way of locking a Civ into a particular Gov type?

By easy I mean say a tick box in the editor!!!

Still if you known any way at all please post.

Thanks

If you want a civ to use the same gov all the time, I think the easiest way would be making an un-researchable tech ("none" era) ,using that tech as needed for that government. And giving the civ that tech. Do that with all govs and give each civ just the tech for one gov, and they will never switch ;)

Can they not still trade these techs, and thus gain the other types of Gov this way?

I think I better say what I was hoping to do.

The Huns would start in Despotism, which would be their favourite Gov, to compensate them for having this quite poor Gov type they would start with "Huns Wonder" which only they can build. This wonder places a Skull Tower (+1 culture) in every Hun City.

The Skull Tower can not be built by itself but only through the wonder.

So far so good, this all works (I bet your supprised I managed to get this far).

I just don’t want the Huns switching later to a better type of Gov but would like them to sick with Despotism!

I use a hidden tech, which the Huns start with to flag who can build this wonder. I could use this to stop them researching other Gov types, but they could still trade them! and then swap!

Thanks for you help

There is?

I only have PTW at the moment, would the flag you mentioned be in Conquest?

I'm assuming it would be on the Civ advances tab???

Thanks All

Exactly, in the advances tab of Conquest :)

Thanks everyone for the help, so yet another reason to buy Conquests.

Decided to make a hidden tech for each Gov type, and only the races with this tech can research that particular Gov, this should enable me to lock certain races into the Gov types I want them to be in! Well I think... not tried it yet.

Well I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Unless this has changed since PTW I think you're in error here -- "favored" and "shunned" refer to how the AI will react to OTHER Civs with govts of those types.

Well, you maybe right.

Still I think I've found a way of locking any race into its favourite Gov when researched, and if they switch they will then not be able to progress to any other type not already researched. Lets say the Huns favourite Gov is Theocracy, when this has been researched they will not be able to research any Gov after this nor will they be able to trade for a better Gov. I just hope they will then switch to Theocracy!!!

Well that the theory...
