This game is making me feel like a total CIV noob, so much things to consider even combat is complicated.
Not the actual combat but all the different stats my units can have.

Can't seem to stop reloading and starting over games because of the complexity it turns into,, when going up in time.

I feel i have so little understanding of mostly all aspects of the game even after my excessive searches, reads and printouts. Even red most of the ALC's, did learn a lot of all the information but when playing i cant seem to get my idea's to work, not even on chieftan.

How long did it take most of you to get some basic understanding of most of the aspects and not feeling submershed by all the new stuff that CIV 4 brought us?

BTW i have this game for 10 days now, as always totally hooked from the bat, but OMG this game is complex.

Tips to make my first few game more enjoyable are welcome

Play the tutorial.

Be sure to check uit the beginners articles in the War Academy.
You'll get a grip of the game more complex features in about a month :)

Welcome to the forums. :)

I've had this game for over a year now, and just yesterday I learnt something new.

I find it helps to decide what you aim to acheive. Then plan ahead. Search for information on here, ask for information, post screenshots and game saves so people can advise you on what to do. These boards are VERY friendly. I've been on loads of boards in the past, and if you do something differently to other people they reply with such hatred that you find yourself checking to see if their location is Hell. That doesn't really happen here.

So, when I start a new game I generally start off with this. I want a Cultural victory, a total of 8 cities, with each city getting enough to food to reach a minimum of 21 population. I need a site next to the coast with at least 4 hills for my production city, with Iron and Copper within the Cultural borders of an early city by the time it gets 100 culture.

What I build and research first generally depends on the resources and Fat Cross tiles I've got to work with, and the type of victory I want decides the leader that I choose.

Unless I've edited a leader to get more than 2 traits.

I hope this helps, and please don't be afraid to ask for help from anyone. :)

You've had the game for ten days? No, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. There's people who have played for years and haven't mastered it yet... in fact, I don't know if you truely can master Civ. There's always new strategies to try... new ways of doing things... new situations...

It sounds like you've done a lot of reading and have found out a lot of information. I don't know what else to add except that it just takes practice. I would also try mixing up your strategy from time to time - you might stumble upon and idea that works better for you, and even if you don't, you can learn a ton by making mistakes.

Welcome to CFC!

The people who've already given you advice, take it. It's good advice! :)

1 thing I would add is that at the end of the day, everyone makes mistakes. It's just whether you can learn from them.

And after all, Civ 4's a game, meant to be enjoyed. So enjoy it!

Absolutely. I'm still a newb after having the game for a while but I'm starting to put things together. The best way to do it is to play out different things.

What I mean is - go into a game warring early and I mean EARLY. That will give you an idea how your units behave. As you progress through the war try different promotions on different units and see how effective they are. Just break your games down. I don't mean just futz around with something and don't really try to win, but don't let that necessarily be your focus.

Early war for combat comfort, OCC for unit and building (and heck, tech) planning and some specialist/food juggling, a no wonders games to see which ones it really hurts not to have (or let the opponents have) so you don't just get into the "Oooh shiny" mode, try an SE, try and SE with war, try a CE. That sort of thing.

Just play around with it. As was said, in 10 days you're probably not going to be a master. And, for me anyway, the sheer number of elements that need to be monitored and understood was overwhelming.

When I started to break it down and see how certain things effected certain others I could start pulling things together. So if the complexity is getting to you, just break it down a bit and play with it. It is just a game after all :D

Oh one last thing - don't get hung up on the score. If you're on the bottom of the heap when 1 AD rolls around it's not an auto-loss, not by a LONG shot.

Thanks for all the information and the welcome to the forum.

Plunged in again and started a game on chieftan with 1 of the Mongol Kublai's on Vanilla (i think u call the bare Civ-game). Map on normal.
Had an early war with my UU's against Roosevelt and totaly annihilated him giving me 3 more prime sites for cities. O ja and the capitol of the Americans.

I am sharing the continent with just Peter and Alexander now, both not so happy with me, i wonder why,

Thanks for the input and i am sure u will find more posts in the future from me.
(PS sorry for the sometimes strange English i type, it aint my native language.

Glad to be of any use. :)

If you ever get stuck in the future, start up another thread and we'll see what we can do. ;)
