Hi guys, had my first mp game with some friends yesterday and while we had a lot of fun, one issue came up rather quick. I was never able to activate my units before the host, it wasnt even close. Sometimes he managed to attack me with multiple units before I managed to move mine, even though i spamclicked like a madman during the whole turn load.

Is this the way it is? Or is it possible to set up dedicated servers or something, where the battles are more fair?

Any feedback appreciated!

Congrats on your first MP game! To some degree yes, that seems to be the way it is. I'm not sure if it should be multiple units, if you already have auto-cycling off, have your unit selected, and are repeatedly clicking where you want it to go as the turn starts. I even move my screen in such a way that I can still click where I want to go even when pop-up messages appear... At best you can probably save one near-death unit per turn.

I do try to take this into account when I'm fighting, and not put myself in situations where it's equal units vs equal units in open field at the start of the turn and so the host advantage wins out. Also, from a different side of the coin, I often find myself holding my ranged fire initially so as to make sure my opponent isn't waiting until 10 seconds before the clock runs out to move ranged units in and fire. Nothing like wasting shots on a melee unit that was just sent out to draw fire only to get wiped out by ranged units coming in late.

Dedicated servers would be super. I wonder if anyone can say whether they've used them and how, and if it's just a 2nd computer in someone's house, if it really eliminates the host advantage.

I am trying to get into MP now, so I don't have any experience with this but I do have a question. Why does the game not process turns in a set order, same as it does in SP? I mean, that would slow things down somewhat but this is a turn based game, no?

Host always has the advantage in Combat since the delay for him to the host is 0s and thats what counts for first moves if bouth move at the same time
Seting up servers for civ is possible but they have to play as a observer in the game
The better idea is to use a phased combat mode

There is a mod that alowes the defender to moves in the first half of the turn and the attacker in the 2. half thats quite good for combat

So if u wan't to fight the host make sure to always have a bigger army
