I CAUGHT THE AI CHEATING!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!
To begin with, the AI got multiple archers, scouts, workers AND settlers!
The AI got bonus techs!
Discounts on other techs!
Discounted production costs!
Reduced maintenance costs!
ITS RIDICULOUS! I demand a recall on all Civilization games!
Handicaps/settings agreed at the start of a game are by definition not cheating.
It's the advantages that gains no mention anywhere, not in the manual, not in the civlopedia, not in the game interface, that are cheating. They are an example of the AI attaining an advantage that the player is not aware of, and while it is static cheating that once burned, the player can compensate for, it's still cheating.
Some examples of flagrant AI cheating:
- Upgrade discounts
- War weariness discounts
- Hidden modifiers from peace weights
- worst enemy trade detection prior to you meeting the AI that gets mad over it (essentially the AI map hacks trade deals)
- (disputable): unwillingness to change ANY civic if in favorite civic
Of the above, the only one that can be reasonable construed as an intended feature upon which the player is aware given pre-determined rules is the last one.
Also note that even the deity AI is so piss-poor with adaptation that if you pulled only the aspects of the game where the computer truly does cheat, the AI would practically suicide itself with war weariness and too many units it couldn't afford to upgrade.
Fine. But at LEAST don't map hack too! Being a worst enemy solely due to trading with one holds a special place in my heart as something that shouldn't have made it past beta, I REALLY hate that cheat. And make no mistake, it's a cheat.
