I usually like to play games where I can mix any leader and civilization, so I usually pick Darius and The Holy Roman Empire. I find that with high technology I can keep up in the power ranking with other countries using less units, so I can focus on building up my economy. Furthermore, I can spam out cities to cover wide areas because of financial/holy roman empire unique building cuts down the maintance cost dramatically and can lead to a quick profit.
Its perfect for war because I can go to war anytime I want, plus with more advanced units I can beat superior numbers. Even when my technology is equalled, I have higher production because I cover more territory early on in the game; so if I need more units, I can quickly switch from building buildings to building unites. Lastly, I usually like the Space Race victory, so the production/techonolgy benefits I get from a Darius/Holy Roman Empire makes me an overwhelming favorite. I just completed a game of Prince, my first one, and beat the closest player by my spaceship beating his spaceship to its destination while his spaceship wasn't even half-way built.
So, what do you think? What do you think are the upsides and downsides of a Darius/Holy Roman Empire combination?

You should try Zulu as well. Zulu's Ikhanda barracks stackable -20% maintenance achieve's similar effects. Except on city maintenance instead of organized's civic maintenance reduction.

Plus with Zulu, you can build Impi spearmen with Combat I + Mobility from all the barracks you spammed everywhere. Impis make almost perfect GG super medics with 2 movement to start and the ability to get woodsman 3.

Hmm...Darius of Zululand. Has a nice ring to it.

I'll try that out in the future, it sounds like an even better balance since it helps with the military too, which I usually lack in in the very begginning. In my last game three strong civilization declared war on me and I was weak, fortunatly they came one at a time so I was able to defeat them one at a time.

I don't think darius would get them at combat I - maybe they're like quechas but I think they just have the promo because Shaka is aggressive (shaka has some of the best synergy in the game to begin with).

Zulu is indeed a great civ, almost any leader could play them pretty well. Inca even moreso, probably.

First off. Congrats on your first Prince win. Here are a couple of other fun combos.

Tokogawa of the Ottoman's. Combat1/Drill1/CG1 janissaries are very bad JuJu.
Any leader of the Roman Empire.
Boudica with any civ with a melee/gunpowder UU
Napolean of Mongolia. 3 promos for munted units from every city with a barracks and Ger plus theo or vassalage. And the economy to support the new lands.
Perciles of China. Easiest cultural win I ever had.
Lincoln of Arabia. High enough happy cap to run all for specialist from the Madrassa and still have citizens in the field to grow the food to support them.

worst combo ever is CivCorpse of (insert civ name here)

Ragnar of Zulu is fun.
Aggressive for those cheap barracks, financial for more research and Impi's for making sure the opponent don't have the same opportunity.

I actually prefer Darius of Mongolian Empire.

Keshiks are the fastest mounted unit in the game and it is amazing how many cities I can conquer in a very short space of time with pure Keshiks. Fin + Org + cottage spam prevents my economy from crashing even if I own 50% of the map due to Keshik spam.

I once tried the following combo:

Boudicca of the Ethiopians, Renaissance Era advanced start; Small map, 12(?) civs. This was sick.

Your Oromos can get Combat I, Drill IV at just 4 exp points... and if you play with Theocracy/Feudalism your straight-from Barracks units are just 1 exp point away from their SIXTH promotion. Let's not even start with what happens when you settle a few GG-s...

Stalin of rome? Charismatic/organized incans?

I haven't played unrestricted leaders for a while; I always get aggravated when I meet montezuma of india. I presume you start with the techs of the civ not the leader, correct?
How about a philosophical leader with forums? Find some marble and beeline aesthetics, build the parthenon, then forums, then pacifism +300% gpp!!! (Although pacifism w/ thousands of praets seems wrong)

How do you combine leaders with different civilizations? Someone please tell me.

I've never played unrestricted leaders, mainly because it seemed to break the balance of the game. Mind you, those Oromo's sound like they might be, ah, fun on a hard difficulty, small map.

im playing Darius now, aiming for cultural victory at immortal difficulty (fractal map)
i believe Financial+Organized+Apothecary would make a great combo for cultural win
it's like having 3 traits (Financial, Organized and Expansive)
