This is a story about me and my buddy Charle. Charle found Christianity early (Choose religion was on) near my border. Since he was the only zealot around, most AI convert to Christian. I accept Christ to get others to like me.

As I said, his holy city is just next to my border, so I just couldn't resist taking his Shrine. He helped me by declaring war on me. I knew it coming because 1 turn before he was pleased to me, he had his hand full. I was his only neighbor whom he isn't please with. I was prepared, so his attack was a suicide attack. I got his holy city without any diplomatics consequence nor much warwariness. a couple centuries later, I made him my vassal.

I thought he would be a good ally to have, because we shared religion and he had nothing against me. I didn't cripple him much. His land was around 40% of mine. Never had I thought there would be a war of independence soon. I demand resource tribute twice, and the third time I demand the same resource, he declared war on me! his force is about half of mine and outdated, I could easily crush him. But I use the time machine back to when he was my b***

Now, does this happen to anyone else? Does "Refusal means war" really means war?

good to know the AI sometimes got some ba... i normally have some resources to spare, then i never ask my vassals to give me their resources as tribute, but i just exchange what is useful for me for what i don't care... i think if you give something back they cannot say no. unless you ask for oil, uranium, iron, coal in exchange for crabs... hehe... but as long trades are "fairly fair" they'll accept

they definitely can be ballsy. One thing I know is that when a vassal cancels a tribute trade, its time to hug your stack to his borders

I've only had a vassal break from me once. At the time I had nearly my entire army on the other continent, but I did have a stockpile of nukes built up.

I blew up every city he had and swept in with some garrison units to take his capital at my border. I had taken a couple of his other cities via culture already.

He went from voluntary vassal to capitulated real fast :)

Funny thing was he declared war on me instead of joining my war against somebody on the other continent. That'll learn him!

Voluntary vassals leave me all the time. I don't make too much of a deal out of it, I prefer having Capitulated vassals. Voluntary vassals have too much power.

EDIT: One thing I would like to see in the future is more colonies declaring independence.

EDIT II: Or rather, colonies declaring independence, period.

I had my first experience with vassals declaring war on me my last game. Needless to say, I nuked him back the the stone age. It was basically suicide on his part. My powergraph numbers were easily double his.
