Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) has reversed his stance on same-sex marriage two years after learning that his son is gay, several Ohio news outlets, including the Columbus Dispatch and the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reported Friday.

In an interview with Ohio reporters in his Senate office, Portman said that his son, Will, came out to the senator and his wife in February 2011.

"It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that's of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have -- to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years," Portman said.

Portman said that his son, who is now a junior at Yale University, inspired him to reassess his position on same-sex unions. The senator also consulted clergy on the matter, as well as friends such as former Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter Mary is openly gay. According to Portman, Cheney told the senator to "follow [his] heart" on the matter.

"The overriding message of love and compassion that I take from the Bible, and certainly the Golden Rule, and the fact that I believe we are all created by our maker, that has all influenced me in terms of my change on this issue," Portman said.

Portman's announcement comes just days before the Supreme Court hears arguments on the Defense Of Marriage Act, the federal ban on same-sex marriage. Portman co-sponsored the measure as a member of the U.S. House in 1996. And in 2009, Portman voted for a measure prohibiting same-sex couples in Washington state from adopting children.

In 2011, Portman's "openly hostile" record on gay rights led to hundreds of students at the University of Michigan objecting to the senator speaking at the school's graduation ceremony.

"Rob believes marriage is a sacred bond between one man and one woman," a Portman spokesman told the Plain Dealer at the time of the protest.

Portman, who was considered by 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney as a potential running mate, says that he informed Romney about his son's sexual orientation.

"I told Mitt Romney everything," Portman told CNN. "That process is, intrusive would be one way to put it. But, no, yeah, I told him everything."

The senator also said that Romney's campaign told him that his son's sexuality was not part of the decision to select Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) over Portman.

What a reach around! That's some flexibility for him to change position like that.

What does this bode for other Republican Senators? Who will be the next to come out? Has the gay rights movement penetrated the tipping point? How deep could Rob's move go?

Good on him.

Que the Frothing Reactionaries in 5...4...

I'm always split on whether it is a good or a bad thing that these people always need to have homosexual family members to change their mind.

Like, oh, so it negatively affects people I'm close to? Yeah, now it's totally bad what we've been doing.

Republican have already forgotten about MITT ROMNEY ?
Eight years of G.W.Bush in a collective amnesia I can understand but the election was only a few months ago.

That's a pretty significant move in Ohio, as Portman is probably the most popular and powerful individual Republican office-holder in the state, one that is NOT known for any kind of social-progressive streak. The dude is waaaaay too boring to be on any national office short list. Portman is going to be Senator forever, unless he decides he wants to be Governor, or Provost of the state university systems.

Good for him though. Having a gay family member is basically the only way older, more conservative Republicans ever change their mind.

And they only seem to do it over a single issue. They continue to be narrow-minded about everything else. One would think that it would cause them to realize this was just the tip of the bigotry iceberg.

Yeah. On the other hand, you have to take what you can get.

Oh well, say hi to my ignorance.

I'll take any excuse to post a video of a politician with that much integrity though :)

It is very much like when their own son or daughter is arrested for marijuana possession, or their own family member gets cancer and needs it to help them cope. It suddenly become a far less serious crime, or even none at all.

Now if only Republicans had the level of empathy to relate to gay people who aren't in their immediate family.

Unfortunately I think that's just how human nature works. For any situation, it's easier to understand it if you or someone close to you has gone through it or something similar.

Considering this is going to be settled by SCOTUS this year, it's not as if it's a political risk.

Now if only he'd find out one of his other kids was a poor and black, he might reconsider his stand on voter ID laws.

I do note that he sat on it for two years before announcing. He knew in February 2011.

Fear is strong and fast. Love is sometimes stronger but it's slower. People value loyalty more than justice, whatever they perceive justice to be. Standard operating procedure really.

We can only hope that at least some of the grandchildren of the reactionaries currently on the Supreme Court turn out to be gay hippies.

Can they just be gay and not be hippies? That whole screw around like crazy, don't trust anyone over 30, and not showering crap probably threw decent drug laws back 25 years. A respectable generation probably would have managed to get that changed already since they are now old and "in power."

Doh!
A Republican lawmaker in New York who has a record of voting against medical marijuana legalization has been arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.

State police said that a suspicious odor was noticed in Assemblyman Steve Katz’s vehicle when they pulled him over for driving around 80 mph in a 75 mph zone at around 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

“After noting the odor of marijuana, a New York State Trooper found Katz in possession of a small bag of marijuana,” a statement from state police said, according to the Times Union.

Katz was given an appearance ticket for having less than 25 grams and is scheduled to appear in Coeymans Town Court on March 8. He also faces charges for speeding.

Last year, the assemblyman voted against a bill that would have legalized medical marijuana in New York.

Katz’ office said that he was expected to release a statement later on Friday.
