First strikes

... what I'm looking for is consistency of damage too. Admittedly that late in the game consistency is attained by numbers anyway.

What do you mean by consistency of damage? Do you mean the probability of scoring at least one damaging hit on the defender? If you can be more explicit I can give you results. :D

Yes, the probability of damaging the defender at all.

Maybe there are break points, maybe there aren't and combat is always better in that case (barring counter promotions). It does not appear to be something that perception alone can pick up. Possibly I'll just go into WB and line up rows of units :p. We'll see.

A little thread necromancy here, but I was wondering if first strikes cancel each other out. So if both my unit and my enemy's unit have one FS, what happens?

Yes, they cancel each other out.
Also, if one unit has first strike immunity that means all his first strikes are counted unless the other guy also has immunity.
(Keshik with Flanking II for instance)

First strikes effectively cancel each other out. That is, two units with equal number of guaranteed first strikes fighting will be equivalent to two similar units but without the first strikes. Note that at the game level they are not cancelled out - pointless rounds are fought (and you should be able to see this in the battle animations if you turn them on).

Note also that first strike chances don't cancel out. All of this is sort of covered in more detail in the thread linked in my signature.
