Has anyone tried to see how quickly they could complete the tech tree historically speaking. If so what are the best times you have been able to achieve, and what are some good strategies. I was thinking about attempting to see how fast I could accomplish this.

It's got to be sometime in the 1800's when I was playing Rome...
Maybe people can post their best times.

I haven't really tried, but pick a civ that has good trade and can stay small.., no more than 5 really good cities, but 3 cities would probably be enough. The Dutch, English, French, Japanese and Romans come to mind. Mali would be a challenge due to the later start, but their power may make it possible.

I got it as Germany just slightly before 1940, because I recall having to wait for the areas UHV condition to kick in.

    Some useful things to try:
    1. Have 2 good vassals which you gift the prerequisites to and can direct to research military techs (e.g. I never researched military tradition, MS (used to be chemistry). Certain AIs will trade them to you (Mali and India) while others (Khmer, Aztec, Inca) will not. You aim for the science ones (liberalism, scientific method, physics, communism, electricity, radio, plastics, computers). Build Internet early in Denver so that if your 2 vassals (or 1 vassal and an AI opponent) know it, you know it too.
    2. Steal techs from the Dutch and Americans like mad (building an early courthouse and spawning a great spy will help a lot)
    3. No war (France's UP is particularly useful)
    4. Stay around 8-10 big cities and use free religion, representation, free speech, environmentalism (not free trade as you want your cities to grow big for specialists), emancipation. Building the Statue of Liberty may also help if you have a large continental presence. Don't forget to get a national park in Edmonton.
    5. Get Aluminum company (for the science) and Sid's Sushi (for big cities)
    6. getting 2/3 UHV and various other golden ages fueled by great people and Taj Mahal (which probably explains why the 3000 BC civs like Rome can get liberalism in 1000 AD if you have the Mausoleum).
