For those of you who are getting this error, it is fully reproducible by downloading the Xtended 4.0 Assets folder and replacing the old assets folder with it.
DO NOT REPLACE THE ASSETS FOLDER FROM MASTER OF MANA
You need the files that are already there, they are not replaced by the new Assets folder (making it a smaller download).
The problem is likely from replacing the existing asset folder completely with the new one.
COPY/REPLACE MOVE ALL OF THE FILES FROM THE NEW ASSET FOLDER TO THE OLD ONE.
So instead, select all the files from the unzipped Xtended folder and move them into the existing Assets folder from Master of Mana, "yes" to copy and replace all conflicts that arise.
I had this very same problem - I misunderstood the installation instructions. However, this worked for me.
To be safe, I first moved the asset files from 3.0, then overwrote them with the ones from 4.0. I assume that you could just do 4.0 and skip 3.0, but if not, that is the path that I took and it is working now.
