Flag on a Unit

I noticed that in the Charlemagne scenario heavy swordsman have the flag from the nation he is aligned with on his shield. How is that done?

they have different model textures specified in the art file and xml

I'm pretty sure it isn't I now have integrate most of the Charlemagne units into and personal mod and they take on the flag of civs that are completely new to the game.
