football thread No11

Which is the substance of my original complaint. Modern sports in general have simply lost their way when they forgot that the purpose of sports is to entertain.
But I would disagree. Back even in Ancient Greek times, the purpose of sports was to keep fit, the (immediate) incentive was to win, entertainment was a byproduct

Organised sport back then was a continuation of war by other means.

But the Spartans and Athenians played amongst themselves, not against each other. In the sense, it's more appropriate to say war was an extension of sports

But it was only today that I was reading the complaints about the Nations League

(…) the Nations League is supposed to pit countries of similar ability against each other, even if England resemble something of a barracuda rubbing fins with the comparative minnows in the pond that is Group B2.
Back-to-back Euro finalists, they are clearly vastly superior to Ireland and Finland, who between them have qualified for just two major tournaments since 2016 and lost to England during the last interlull, while tonight at Wembley they host a Greece side who haven’t been to a major tournament in over a decade.

Well. Minnows indeed.

Haaland didn't score?

Austria 5 - Norway 1 after 75 mins.

This is beyond embarrassing 😂
It's the never ending circle of Norway:

A few good games against mediocre teams -----> hype -----> total burnout in important games against decent opponents

Repeat.

Does the same happen with World Cup qualifiers?

(I still remember that calamitous 1-3 aggregate defeat against Hungary)

Yeah pretty much
Well England have appointed Thomas Tuchel as Head Coach

It will be interesting to see how that works out.

Gianni Infantino has enlisted Lionel Messi's Inter Miami FC into his demented Super Mega Deluxe Club World Cup, for which hardly anybody qualifies through actually winning any trophies.

Meanwhile, 100 footballers have signed a letter asking Infantino to cancel the sponsorship deal with Aramco and ‘Visit Saudi’ for the Women's World Cup.

Argentina's FA brought forward elections a full year ahead of schedule in order to re-elect its president unopposed (i.e. to prevent anybody else from running) and the president was duly re-elected unanimously after it was ‘spontaneously’ proposed that the election be by acclamation rather than by secret ballot.

This, of course, was accompanied by the cancelling of relegation across all categories.

Also, the FA as a whole is the subject of a tussle between its present showrunners, who insist on a theoretically non-profit format of ownership, and incomers who want to expropriate (they call it ‘privatise’) all clubs and sell them off to the highest bidder so they can end up like Chelski or Valencia.

After a fantastic 23/24 season, Real Madrid are really bursting at the seams now. Completely overplayed by Barcelona, now a deserved loss against Milan, not too surprising considering the start to season had only been so rosy thanks to individual moments of brilliance, but wasn't expecting them to fall apart like this
