I'm a chinese chess player too. On the other hand I've never tried japanese chess (Shogi). It's very interesting too, since the units you capture can be used again on your side!!!

I saw this other chess that I like that has an extra piece (I forget what it was called) that has the movements of a queen and a knight combined. It looked pretty interesting.
 
actually,(if we are talking about same game...) i think that there were 2 extra pieces. one that moved like rook and knight, and one that moved like bishop and knight.
 
The extra piece moving like a rook is called cannon. The rook is in fact called chariot. And the elephant (=bishop) is limited since it cannot cross the river (normal, elephants don't swim

The other 2 extra pieces are the minister who are forced to stay within the castle to protect the general (=king)

Different game. I just remembered the name of that special piece that moved like a queen and a knight. It was the Duke. The game is called Duke chess and it has an extra row for the extra piece. I havn't seen that game you are talking about but it sounds interesting. Oh and btw, it's your move in our game
