According to reports from CNN, Ford and UAW have reached an agree in which auto workers will accept lower pay:

Ford said the agreement would trim its all-in average wages for the 42,000 workers covered under the contract to about $55 per hour this year, while the U.S. operations of foreign-based automakers pay workers on average $48 to $49 per hour.

Now compare this to what I used to make as a first-year associate at Davis, Polk & Wardwell, one of the most prestigious law firm in the US:

annual pay = $125000, which equals about $2400 per week. I worked about 70-90 hours a week. So hourly pay = $24-$34. A mere half of what these auto workers who build unreliable cars make. Considering that putting wheels on a car does not require any education beyond middle school, let alone college and graduate school, I probably should have picked a different career.

It's all-in wages so would include any pension contributions, health benefits etc and be calculated over hours actually worked, excluding eg: holidays and sickness, so will work out as a higher number than just looking at your pay packet divided by the number of weeks, but even so, I too would like to get something even near that!

It kinda kills any sympathy you might have for the Unions, doesn't it?

It's usually about 40% of the wages, so Ford is actually paying $77 per hour per employee.

Not sure what's more disappointing in the OP, your snobbery or the pay rate of UAW workers.

So why didn't you?

It's snobbish to think it isn't right for an uneducated auto worker to be making four times as much as a college accredited school teacher?

I guess I'm a snob.

how are they "uneducated"? Building a car is rather difficult, and requires a lot of training.

We should also compare the $55/hr to what police officers in NYC make. They start at a base salary of $25,000. In addition to being vastly better paid, the auto workers won't run the risk of being shot at. It is also revealing to note that a lousy subway announcer who can't even pronounce the name of streets correctly can make more than a detective or a senior public school teacher.

If working in a factory is so appealing, feel free to work there ;)

Anyone who feels that Ford factory workers have a dream job should send an application there asap. This way, as soon as a spot opens, you can get your $55/hour job.

Similarly, garbagemen make more money than many jobs that require a college degree. So send an application there as well.

foreign-based automakers pay workers on average $48 to $49 per hour.
US workers set aside, Why the hell are people paid so much money for a job that any fool could do right out of high school? And from what I hear about in some foreign nations, they don't even make though high school. They join the work force at age 16.

dude, really WTH! I'll never make 55/hr in my life. Someone explain this to me plz!

Garbage collectors do make good money, about 20-30/hr. That's pretty great for someone without any investment in his career in the form of increasingly expensive education and delayed earning. The downsize of course is that they must go to work real early in the morning and deal with garbage.

You should apply to work there then. problem solved.

And once they reach their daily quota, they sit on their asses.

The UAW owns the autmoakes. If they dont get what they want, they go on strike and shut down the auto company. They have the upper hand in it all and they get these outrageous pays.

The UAW can burn in hell.

All you people complaining should get a better job, you're not forced to work where you're working now.

If I am ever in need of a job and live near one, I'll be sure to do that. :p

Making $125K annually + all those benefits in an area where the cost of living is among the lowest in the country is a pretty cushy deal. Save and invest your money wisely and you can retire after a few years.

Garbagemen make more money because if the companies did not offer that much, no one would take the job.

i think im dropping out.
