I just bought Civ3 - the most recent version. The relationship lines in the foreign advisor screen did not show up. So I downloaded and installed the latest patch and went back to the game I was on before and the lines are still not showing up. Please help! I'm using Windows 98. THANK YOU

This problem has been around since the release of the game a year ago. I did some searching, and the solution seems to be:

1) make sure you are running with the current patch (1.29 now)
2) make sure your video display drivers are up to date.

If both of those are true, and you are still having trouble, I can only suggest contacting Infogrames Tech Support.

Thank you for your reply! I went home last night and did Windows Update and downloaded the most recent version of DirectX. Neither worked. I guess I'm just not sure how to check the video drivers to see if they're up-to-date. Would you help me with that?
Thanks!

1. Are you sure you met the civs?
2. Do you have an embassy with that civ?
3. Is the civ (leader) selected?
4. Make sure the peace/war/ROP/MPP buttons are selected.

I have met the other civ, the war/peace boxes are selected & the leader is selected, but no I don't have an embassy! Maybe that's it. I didn't know you had to have an embassy for the lines to show up. However, there are no lines in the "key" box either :( Would there be those lines in the key box even before relationship lines would show up? What's ROP/MPP? THANKS AGAIN! So helpful!

ROP/MPP = Right of Passage/Mutual Protection Pact, two diplomatic agreements that civs can have. The are listed in the box on the Foreign Advisor screen just below War/Peace.

To check your video drivers, first, right-click on your "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and select "Properties". Click on the "Device Manager" tab, and scroll down the list until you find a node named "Display adapters". Open that node by clicking the "+" sign to its left. Click on the adapter listed, and then click the "Properties" button at the bottom of the dialog box. Click the "Driver" tab to get details about your current video driver.

(Caveat: That is the way to find them on my crummy Win95 box at work. Your system may vary.)

To update them, just go to your video manufacturer's website. (If you don't know what it is, just search the web (google is good. :) ) for your video card, i.e. "nvidea drivers".) Follow the instructions there.

Hope that helps! :D

Maybe click on the picture of the leader on the foreign advisor screen?
I think this has done it for me before.

Well, I updated the video card, which was NOT easy. It worked!!! I can now see beautiful blue relationship lines in the foreign advisor box!!

Thanks!
