Saw Civ 5 on the shelf in a walmart tonight. Tried to buy it, the employee saw it and knew it was too early and denied the sale. Out of curiosity he checked to see if it would even ring up and it did...

Had he not known I assume I would have installed and Steam would simply refuse to activate, so no big loss.. but it was awesome to see the product sitting on the shelf !

Yeah apparently some people have been sold the game already and are complaining on the 2k forums because they can't play what they bought yet. Typical walmart greed and stupidity.

i was totally cool about it. Guy was doing his job and fixing a mistake. And I knew I couldn't play anyway and already had the manual downloaded... there was nothing to gain. Fun though, its the first time I've ever stumbled on a game put on the shelf early by accident.

usually you don't see early leaks from them
As funny as this is. Just so you know walmart has a avid history of breaking street dates. Its almost expected of them at this point. Its cool if your store is competent enough not to do so. But it happens alot.

Bound to happen. A lot of the people working their "tech" department know very little about what they're selling and WalMart has a LOT of stores.

Just more reason for companies to switch to digital download.

What would happen if it was sold to somebody ( highly unlikely, I know ) that doesn't have internet access and just has a laptop to play games on during flights and train journeys? How are they going to activate it on Steam?

I guess he would have to go to a free wifi spot (major airports all have one) and activate it, and then play it offline. Free wifi can also be found in pubs, shopping malls, and coffee houses.

Then again, how owns a computer and doesn't have an internet connection in 2010....

I would expect the box to say, in small print, "requires internet connection to activate" or something.

you only have to activate it once. So get connected, then you can play offline as much as you want.

in Slovenia i found civ VII in the garbage near my flat...and saw naer by back to the future car with Micheal J. Fox inside....he told me that this game in future causes a lot of damage for states production as people want to play it all the time..off course then i woke up and saw still 5 days to go..;)
