Fox News Misreports Poll Numbers To Claim That Most Americans Don’t Want GOP To Compromise On Budget

The federal government is on the verge of shutting down as Republican and Democratic Party negotiators have failed to reach a compromise on a bill to continue to fund the government. Progressives are resisting deeper cuts to programs Main Street Americans rely on, like Pell Grants and Head Start, yet Tea Party Republicans continue to demand more cuts.

This morning, Fox News hosted Rep. Allen West (R-FL) to talk about the cuts that the Tea Party wants. In order to frame the discussion as supporting West’s position, which is anti-compromise, the right-wing network cited a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll that it claimed showed that most Americans do not want the Republicans to compromise. Host Martha MacCallum claimed the poll showed that “56 percent of Americans say that [Republicans] should stick to their positions.” Watch it:

The problem with the poll that Fox cited is that it doesn’t say anything like what they claim it does. In fact, it appears that they actually switched the numbers around. The poll in question does find that 56 percent of respondents do not want to see the GOP compromise, but the question was directed to self-identified Republicans — meaning that Fox essentially took the number for Republicans and claimed that it represented all Americans:

In reality, the poll also shows that a plurality of Americans think Republicans would bear responsibility for a shutdown:

I think by this stage we'll just assume that every Maths related issue has been "accidently" switched around on Fox news.

EDIT: Not good news for Dems either. Since Obama and Dems getting 20+20+2 of the blame overall
The've been far too weak and should rightly bare the majority of the blame

Not really sure what the point of this is. Most of us know that Fox News couldn't be trusted to report on grass growing without putting changing the facts to put a conservative spin on it. It's honestly not even funny.

Of course, there's a segment of CFC that hasn't come around to this view, but they see no logical contradiction between calling this an isolated, unrepresentative incident and criticizing you for spamming up the forum with baker's dozens of these isolated incidents.

Is that why they are moving Beck into the fact finding department?

Still waiting for Fox to "accidentally" post a poll in the Dems favor.

Well shouldn't Dems and Obama be added together. Seems like thinkprogress is playing with the numbers. The truth is that In reality, the poll also shows that a plurality of Americans think Obama and the Democrats would bear responsibility for a shutdown:

Overlap? People who think one are highly likely to think the other.

The sad thing is that it took me 30 sec to prove I have better math skills then Fox.

OP could use a link for the source...

Source will be somehow biased. Evidence that the source is independent and well-reputed will be brushed away with straw man. CNN will be labeled as "lol, no better" and the game will be forfeit by all parties.

and the game will be forfeit by all parties.
What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm?

...an idea. Resilient; highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it's almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed - fully understood - that sticks, right in there somewhere.

Why not just say 42% v 37% then ?
No need to pull out a 56% figure just to make yourself look good.

Come on....this wasnt exactly that hard to predict. The only thing you left out was the required pics of the My Lai Massacre. :p

Well Republicans only taken a mear 9 years to forget 9-11. And that was with 9-11 being mentioned a few million times a second.
