I was bored this evening, so I watched the July 4th fireworks show on NBC. It featured alot of corny dialogue and some great fireworks. As they panned around the river, they had some up-close shots of lighted signs of different companies - obviously sponsors. But one caught my eye. The camera panned in on a lighted minature Stature of Liberty. It was all lit up, and it had a torch that gave up a spray of sparks. But, sure enough, underneath the false Statue was a lighted "JEEP" sign.

I laughed and felt troubled by the sight. The Statue of Liberty, brought to you by Jeep? Granted, it wasn't the real thing, but the impression was made. What was this implying, I thought, that freedom is brought to me by Jeep?

What do you think? Is it OK or not to brand a classic image - the Statue of Liberty in this case, but the flag, an eagle, all would had the same effect - with a corporation?

[Now, I know that alot of companies use patriotic images in their commericials, but this one stood out because the patriotic image was part of the July 4th show and part of an ad - not just part of an ad.]

Capitalism holds nothing sacred! I suspect that many will reflect on how tradition and everything sacred is going down the drain. Bring back the good old days!

The good old days are a myth. This has been common practice all along, but its our concept of what is sacred that has changed. Patriotism, or the Statue of Liberty, should never fit into the sacred catagory. It belongs to all Americans, including advertising executives.

JEEP wants to be patriotic, who am I to fault them. Plus, unlike many companies, Jeep actually DID play a vital role in certain freedom securing things like WW2, though I don't know the ties between today's company and the runabout vehicles of the 1940s.

When the statue was built a company that made laxative wanted to stamp it's symbol at the base in return for donating money.

Well, technically, there are laws that state that the American flag can not be used for advertising purposes, but since they are not inforced...

Seriously, I don't have too much of a problem with it.

Really, it could be Mitsubishi or something instead.

Hey, GM had that "Keep America Rolling" ad after September 11th.

There is an interesting article in the Week in Review today about the history of patriotism in ads...
