Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I am wrong or is there a rule in which if you skew someone's post to make it sound like they were saying something else than they originally were is prohibited?

I believe he's talking about this statement:

Moderator Action: This will remain stickied for a day or two:

I have noticed a disturbing trend where people are deliberately misquoting other people.

Deliberately misquoting is considered trolling, and will be dealt with as such. To imply that someone has said something that they have not said is misrepresentation and is very underhanded. To reduce someone's quote to some pithy cut-down response is trolling. Quotes are to be used to address specific points.

I suggest that people who think it is witty and contributes to their making a point in a debate think again. You will be dealt with.

I think the misquoting rule only applies if the misquote is malicious, i.e. if it is:

Your correction of KMadCandy's post was neither of these; it was just a correction of facts. Likewise, I changed ainwood's post in the quote above, but since it wasn't malicious I wouldn't get infracted for it.

An example of a malicious misquote might be (and note: I'm not trying to flame you, just using it as an example ;)) if I changed your above post:

Some people, apparently (and I was on CFC hiatus at the time, so I'm not sure) using misquotes like that to 'win points' in debates/flamefests.

I suppose there's a limit in the forum database, but that's likely to be somewhere in the millions. So he'll be fine for the next couple of years.

The 'Welcome, New Members!' thread in the Civ IV General Discussion forum has been unstickied. Why is this?

(It's not really a FAQ, but it doesn't really warrant its own thread.)
